China reports new cases of African swine fever in illegally transported piglets


China announced today (30 March) that new cases of African swine fever have been confirmed in piglets illegally transported to the Inner Mongolia region.

The latest African swine fever outbreak, detected in a herd of 200 piglets on a farm in Ordos city in the region, has killed 92 of the animals.
China has reported several new cases of the deadly disease this month - its agriculture ministry announced on 12 March that Sichuan province had detected ASF on a truck transporting 111 pigs illegally transported from other provinces.

The deadly disease, first detected in China in August 2018, is estimated to have slashed the country's hog herd by almost 50 percent. As both the world's biggest importer and producer of pork, China is now unable to produce enough to satisfy its domestic market demands. Since the viral disease broke out among wild boars in Hubei Province on March 3, three other breakouts have happened in Sichuan Province on March 12, 13, and 28, respectively, with another taking place in Henan Province. Cases of African Swine Fever In China Climbing Once Again

China is currently fighting two highly contagious diseases, one that is killing people and another that is killing pigs. The country has already pretty much brought the coronavirus pandemic under control within its borders, which is what it believed it had also done with the African swine fever epidemic. However, new reports have revealed that swine fever cases may be going back up once again.

Since mid-November of last year, China saw continually declining reports of new swine fever cases. The country had taken drastic measures to mitigate the spread of the disease, including the culling of more than 120 million hogs across the country. In February, Chinese health authorities had declared that the swine fever was under control.

According to reports, China's claim of the pandemic being under control may not be that accurate. Reports citing sources within China revealed that more than a dozen cases since the start of March had been recorded. Earlier this month, fresh cases of the virus were reported in the northwestern Gansu province. This was followed by an outbreak that was traced to a truck transporting 83 piglets to Leshan city in China's Sichuan province.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Outbreaks of deadly African swine fever are surging in some parts of southern China following heavy rains, analysts and industry sources said, in what could be a big setback for Beijing's goal of replenishing pork supplies.

China's hog herd, by far the world's largest, shrank last year by around 180 million pigs, or 40%, after the incurable disease decimated farms. Pig producers are building new farms and restocking amid the push to restore lost pork production and tame runaway meat prices.

But while African swine fever outbreaks have declined, partly due to smaller herds and better hygiene, the disease remains an obstacle to herd recovery. African swine fever is typically fatal for pigs but does not affect people.

Heavy rains and flooding across China's south since mid-June appear to have triggered fresh cases, hurting restocking efforts, said Zheng Lili, chief analyst with consultancy Shandong Yongyi.

A Shandong Yongyi survey of small pig farmers, corporate farmers, traders and slaughterhouses in 20 provinces revealed dozens of African swine fever cases had occurred since the heavy rains in Guangdong province, the Guangxi region and other areas.

"Even the medium to large farms were hit," said Zheng.

Farmers typically bury infected pigs, and the rains may have spread the disease via groundwater, analysts said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported a dozen outbreaks of the fever in March and April, however, indicating it was spreading before the rains.

The last case reported by the ministry occurred in Yunnan on June 5. Many outbreaks, though, go unreported...

　　On October 9, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs received a report from the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center, which was confirmed by the Chongqing Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center, and the African swine fever was detected in the middle row of illegally transferred piglets from other provinces at the lower crossing of Taohuayuan Station in Youyang County. . At the time of the seizure, there were 70 piglets in this batch, 14 of them were ill and 2 died.

What is interesting about this announcement is that they are admitting to an isolated incident in Chongqing but say the origin is "other provinces". China has not admitted to any other African swine fever event since July 25, 2020, which was also coincidentally in the Chongqing area (but different sub-districts). link
