Chile - Second case of LP H7N6 bird flu found, turkeys culled

Bird flu has been found at a turkey farm in central Chile, the second case of the disease detected in the country this month, agriculture officials said on Wednesday.

Respiratory problems had been seen in birds at a turkey farm in the central Valparaiso region, the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) said in a statement.

The strain was confirmed as H7, with low pathogenicity. No birds had died, it said, and around 35,000 turkeys would be culled and preventative measures taken to stop the disease spreading.

The case follows one two weeks ago detected at a different facility, also in the Valparaiso region and run by the same company, Agrosuper's [AGRSU.UL] Sopraval unit. The two outbreaks were connected, SAG said.

SAG diagnoses second turkey farm affected by Avian Influenza

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

The Agricultural and Livestock Service confirmed the diagnosis of Avian Influenza in a second farm of fattening turkeys of the company Sopraval, located in the sector El Mel?n of the commune of Nogales, in the region of Valparaiso.

Although there was no mortality in birds and only respiratory signs have been observed since January 16, measures were taken to isolate the enclosure and eliminate any virus. According to the SAG's investigation, this new event is directly related to the focus identified two weeks ago in Quilpu?, so previous measures have simply been extended to the new zone.

The SAG took samples immediately after observing respiratory signs, which were analyzed in the official laboratory of the Service, confirming on Tuesday 17, the presence of Avian Influenza type H7. According to the background, it would be a virus with low pathogenicity, which is confirmed by the fact that there have been no deaths of birds.

In addition, all existing biosecurity protocols were activated to prevent the spread of the virus, and the immediate sacrifice of the sector's 35,000 turkeys, sanitary burial in the same place and the implementation of disinfection.

At the same time, an additional monitoring plan was initiated for all birds in the area to detect any possible virus out of the farm. It should be noted that, following the case detected in the commune of Quilpu?, the SAG has carried out the sampling of all farmed and backyard birds in the affected area (more than 8,000 samples to date), the results of which have all been negative for the virus.

The effort to eliminate the focus quickly is due to the fact that it is an exotic disease of importance to the health and production of domestic and wild birds. From the point of view of the health of the population, this event does not pose a risk, since the consumption of their meats and by-products does not present any danger of transmission to people. Moreover, all poultry farms in the country are monitored, having negative results to this disease, which reaffirms that the national production that is in commerce maintains the highest standards of sanitation worldwide.
