SAG confirms first case of avian influenza in the province of Osorno

The Agricultural and Livestock Service, SAG, detected the first case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAAP) in the province of Osorno. The finding was possible after receiving a complaint from the administrator of a property located in the El Encanto sector, Puyehue commune, giving notice of sick birds (ducks, geese and Emu).
"We went to take samples, we sent them to the livestock laboratory of our institution that identified H5N1 Avian Influenza, a situation that we first communicated to the administrator and the owner of the property, and then we activated the sanitary protocol to prevent the spread of the disease," explained Cristian Andrade. Fuentes, Regional Director (S) of SAG Los Lagos.
“The positive case is in a backyard facility that has about 50 birds. As a Service, we determine the quarantine of the property and the depopulation of the backyard and its contacts," Andrade said.
The SAG regional authority added that, in addition, they notified the mayoress of the Puyehue commune, María Jimena Núñez, to inform the health strategy that the Service will deploy in the area, which includes an active surveillance area of 3 kilometers from the point of discovery. “On that surface, Service officials will carry out a census to find out the existence of birds. We are also going to intensify surveillance in existing wetlands and bodies of water in the place, to avoid contact between wild birds and backyard birds”, she pointed out...
