SANTIAGO: Chile has detected bird flu at a turkey production plant run by poultry producer Agrosuper in the country's central Valparaiso region, the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) said on Wednesday.
SAG said it plans to cull the affected birds and quarantine the area to prevent the infectious disease from spreading.
No humans have been affected by the outbreak, it said.
Specialized laboratories are working to determine what strain of bird flu has infected the animals and once the results are available SAG will decide what further sanitary measures need to be taken.
In 2002, a highly infectious strain of bird flu was detected in Chile for the first time, curtailing poultry exports. That outbreak was brought under control.
Agrosuper said that the turkey plant, operated by its Sopraval unit, is located in rural Quilpue.
Different strains of bird flu, which can be spread to poultry by wild birds, have been detected across Asia and in Europe in recent weeks, leading to the slaughtering of millions of birds in South Korea and Japan and several human infections in China.:tiphat:http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...u/3414506.html

Yesterday, the Ministry of Health said that there is no danger for those who consume the product. In addition, they added that the risk of infection with workers is low. From SAG highlighted the implementation of a plan for workers and neighbors of the plant that have animals.:tiphat:http://www.soychile.cl/Valparaiso/S...enza-aviar-en-planta-Sopraval-de-Quilpue.aspx

Government press release:

SAG detects avian influenza in turkeys for fattening in the Region of Valpara?so

antiago, January 4, 2017 .- The Agricultural and Livestock Service confirmed the existence of an outbreak of avian influenza confined to a staff of turkeys located in the rural sector of the commune of Quilpu?, in the region of Valparaiso. Given this situation, and in a joint effort between the SAG and the Ministry of Health, the existing protocols were immediately activated to eliminate the outbreak and eradicate this exotic disease for Chile, which could affect both wild and domestic poultry species.

The level of pathogenicity of the virus involved in specialized laboratories is being investigated, as the result obtained will determine the next health measures to be taken. As a precaution, the SAG has determined the slaughter and destruction of the affected birds and the isolation of the area in order to prevent the spread of disease in poultry farms and maintain the excellent condition of avian health in the country. At the same time, an additional monitoring plan is being implemented for susceptible birds in the sector. The current situation has been reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The effort to eliminate the focus quickly is due to the fact that it is a disease of importance to the health of the birds and their production. From the point of view of the health of the population, this event does not pose a risk, since the consumption of their meats and by-products does not present any danger of transmission to people. Notwithstanding this, considering that there may be a potential risk of transmission for people exposed to live birds, the strict application of current protection protocols for personnel in contact with birds has been strengthened. It should be noted that avian influenza is currently present in many Asian, European and African countries, and its dissemination is often associated with migratory birds, so that SAG maintains a strong surveillance plan in order to detect the most The eventual entry of the disease.

Minsal for bird flu in turkeys: "The meat can be consumed, there is no risk for humans"

BY 24HORAS.CL TVN

The head of the Department of Public Policy of the Minsal, Tito Pizarro, clarified that the avian influence detected is type H7, less contagious than previously detected in the world.

The head of public policy department of the Ministry of Health, Tito Pizarro , presented new information regarding bird flu detected on Wednesday at the campus turkey farm located in the rural area of "Las Palmas" in Quilpu?.

The company Agrosuper indicated that the fact was detected in the rural sector of "Las Palmas" in Quilpu?.

"The fact happened in a fundamental turkey slaughtering plant where they were studied and found that they were getting sick because of an avian influence that affects them only," he said.

The authority clarified that the current theory is that since the birds are migratory, they come from an area that has this disease to one that does not have it.

" Avian influenza is a disease that affects birds, in this case turkeys, and no risk for human consumption, meat can be consumed so that no transmission to humans. There has been found transmission consumption contaminated meat , "he said.

The sacrifice of approximately 350 thousand birds is done in the plant is to prevent contagion between them , but what is sold in the supermarket is safe for users, "birds can be consumed across the country" .

In the case of workers it is necessary to take measures such as monitoring of its protection mechanisms to prevent the spread of sick live birds.

" Avian influenza we have now is H7, is not known in the world, so it has spread to humans, so the risk is low or very low , " said Pizarro.

" We have a control Seremi Health on controls and so far no worker affected ".

For its part, the SAG is deployed throughout the country to monitor the evolution of the situation.

SYMPTOMS IN CASE OF CONTAGIO

Pizarro said that in the case of human infection (from live birds), the symptoms are similar to a flu, such as fever or malaise, so they must go to an emergency service.

In that sense, l a person must be isolated to avoid spreading it to others and used treatment is symptomatic , where efforts are concentrated in lower fever and relieve discomfort, among others.

As a result, "we ask employers and employees who meet protection measures , " he said.

They point to migration of seagulls as a possible cause of avian influenza in Sopraval turkeys

05/01/2017 |

After detecting the disease, 350 thousand birds of the "fattening" turkey plant will have to be slaughtered due to this disease, according to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) confirmed Wednesday.

The Undersecretary of Public Health, Jaime Burrows, pointed to the possibility that seagulls have infected bird flu detected at a Sopraval turkey plant in Quilpu?.

After detecting the disease, 350 thousand birds of the "fattening" turkey plant will have to be slaughtered due to this disease, according to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG).

"We had been notified by the SAG about three or four weeks before this episode, of seagulls that had been found dead, had been analyzed and had also a low risk bird flu for transmission," Burrows said.

"We are studying, we have to do more genetic tests to see if it is the same strain or the same type that now affected turkeys, but the mechanism by which it is produced or where it is filtered is the migration of birds from one country to another (...) the sanitary controls in our country are completely strict, "he said.

Meanwhile, in the Agrosuper plant, a wide deployment is carried out to avoid new infections in birds, so that the workers and officials of the SAG must go through at least five stages of washing to enter the enclosure.

SANTIAGO - Chile's Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) said on Friday that the strain of bird flu detected at a turkey production plant in the country's central Valparaiso region is not highly dangerous.
The outbreak was detected at a plant run by a subsidiary of poultry producer Agrosuper. The SAG has said it will cull some 350,000 affected birds and quarantine the area to prevent the infectious disease from spreading.
The SAG said that lab tests undertaken in conjunction with the US-based Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service "confirmed that the bird flu virus detected at the turkey plant in Quilpue township is of low pathogenicity, meaning this case poses little risk to animal health."
It added that the results would allow for normal exports from Chile to continue, after countries such as Peru halted poultry imports from the neighbouring nation...:tiphat:http://www.enca.com/world/chile-says-bird-flu-strain-detected-not-particularly-dangerous
