The Maule Seremi Health confirmed the first recorded death from hantavirus this year. This is a 54 year old farm worker, Corralones sector of the community of San Clemente, who died on April 1 and was ratified Tuesday by the Institute of Public Health as a positive case of hantavirus.
During the year 2011 there have been three cases of hantavirus in the region, being two mild and one with fatal consequence.
After showing symptoms, the patient from the rural sector Corralones was referred to hospital and then to Curico Talca, where he died on April 1 of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome.
According to the Department of Public Health Health Seremi, cases of hantavirus reported in 2011 equivalent to 33% compared to the country level, where to date, recorded 23 cases with a score of eight deaths, equivalent to a 34% of lethality.
In 2010, the Maule was eleven cases of hantavirus, three of whom died, representing 27.2% of lethality. During the same year at the country, reported 61 cases with 22 deaths, therefore the figures reported in the region are within the normal range.
The SEREMI of Health through the Epidemiology Unit, is coordinating research to specifically determine the likely sites of infection, surveillance of contacts and potential patient risk factors who died. Also, the health authority stressed that before any symptoms such as fever, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms and myalgia, people should go to the nearest health center
