Children's hospital sees jump in RSV cases

With respiratory syncytial virus season in full swing, Cardon Children's Medical Center is already seeing a spike in cases among children under age one.

Hospital officials say they have admitted an estimated 100 cases per week in the last three weeks, which doesn't include patients who go to the emergency room and aren't admitted, said Marti Reich, infection prevention nurse for Cardon Children' Medical Center and Banner Desert Medical Center.

Maricopa County overall has seen a 15 to 20 percent decline in 2009-2010 compared to prior seasons, reports the Arizona Department of Health Services. But that could change in March when it's the peak time for RSV.

Reich said the hospital's expansion of additional beds has also increased the number of children treated for illnesses.

Visitors with a fever, cough or running nose are asked to not enter the children's hospital and Banner Desert Medical Center, which is next to it. During influenza season, children must be 12 years old to visit other patients.

A viral disease of the lungs, which has symptoms similar to a cold such as a cough, runny nose or slight fever. RSV among infants and young children can cause serious respiratory infections that lead to lethargy, loss of appetite or even respiratory failure.

How can parents prevent it?

-Keep children home from school if they have a cough, fever and runny nose to prevent spreading the virus.

>> Good hand washing and cleaning in the home.

>> Keep hands away from the "T" Zone, which is the eyes nose and mouth.

>> Keep high risk children --small babies, premature infants or children with asthma or cancer -- from crowds where they are susceptible to people who are coughing. About Cardon Children's Medical Center
