Health officials are looking into a stomach illness making children sick at a popular Vancouver Island summer camp.

Children started falling ill at Camp Qwanoes in Crofton July 9, the second week the camp was open for summer.

Testing has already ruled out known water- and food-borne pathogens. The Vancouver Island Health Authority is continuing its testing.

Affected children are being isolated for 48 hours to reduce chances the contagion will be spread.

On average more than 20 children a week are falling ill with the bug, which causes vomiting and flu-like symptoms....

"Camp is a place where kids can try things that just don't happen in everyday life," says Scott Bayley, executive director. "And it's all in a safe place. At Qwanoes kids can be kids, kids are valued and accepted, and fun is a big part of each day." . . .
"We started 45 years ago with a few hundred kids. Now this summer we expect almost 4,000 from all across Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver, and even beyond," said Bayley. "From Crofton to Ucluelet, Delta to Hope and Canada to New Zealand and Brazil, our staff come from all over. This summer we'll welcome staff from about 12 countries and many provinces across Canada." . . .
