A child has died in Victoria after a major spike in flu cases across Australia this summer, with thousands of cases recorded in Victoria alone.

A child has died in Victoria amid a major spike in summer flu cases this year.

It comes as the number of cases nationwide has dramatically increased, with 2868 cases recorded in Victoria alone.

Victoria?s acting Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton confirmed the death and but declined to comment further on the circumstances.

The 43-year-old man from Traralgon in the state?s Gippsland area was admitted to hospital on June 15 after battling influenza over more than a week.
A specialised retrieval team was sent from Alfred Hospital to place the man on a machine to provide cardiac and respiratory support according to a Facebook post published by the man?s wife read.
In a statement sent to 9News.com.au, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the death of a man.
?Our sympathies are with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
Unfortunately influenza can strike anyone in the community, even normally healthy people with no underlying health issues, the statement read.

James Day worked at the Latrobe Regional Hospital in Traralgon as an orderly and was hospitalised with flu on June 15.
When his condition worsened, he was transferred to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
He remained in a critical condition for almost a week when he suffered multiple catastrophic complications.
His family made the difficult decision to withdraw life support and he died on June 23, leaving behind his wife Jennifer and a young son.

[h=1]Victorian influenza death toll tops 100[/h] More than 100 Victorians, including eight children, have died from influenza so far this year.
The deaths come as more than 50,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus across the state in 2019.
Victorian health department data shows 105 people who died from the flu were living in residential aged care.
Of the other 20 living in the broader community, 12 were adults and eight were children under the age of 15.
The figures run up to August 31 and compare with data from the start of that month showing there had been at least 75 flu-related deaths and 40,000 cases of the virus.
