(RTTNews) - Early Friday, Roissy-CDG, France-based passenger and cargo air service provider Air France-KLM (AKH | charts | news | PowerRating) reported passenger and cargo load factor for the month of March. The company's passenger load factor reached 79.4% in March, down 0.7% from 80.1% reported in the year-ago month.

Passengers carried rose 4.75% to 5.8 million from 5.56 million in March 2005. Despite an unfavorable calendar effect, revenue pax-kilometers or RPK increased 6.6% on a 7.5% higher Available seat-kilometers or ASK, the company said.

The timing of Easter week in April this year weighed on traffic volumes, and the tourism activity was affected by the Chikungunya epidemic in Indian Ocean zone. However, the yield benefited from stronger business traffic, the company noted. Excluding the Caribbean & Indian Ocean sector, traffic increased 8.6% and the load factor remained almost stable.

On the Americas, March traffic increased 8.1% while load factor declined 0.1% to 87.1%. Asia recorded a 2.4% increase in the load factor, as traffic was up 15.7% on 12.4% higher capacity. On the Africa & Middle-East network, traffic increased by 7.0%. While capacity was up 11.5%, the load factor declined by 3.1% to 74.3%.

Adversely impacted by the Chikungunya epidemic, total traffic on the Indian Ocean & Caribbean sector decreased 5.3% while capacity was down 0.8%. The load factor declined 3.8% and remained at 80.9%.

On the European network, traffic grew 2.7% on a 4.6% higher capacity. However, the load factor met a 1.2% decline in March to 67.1%.
In March, cargo activity posted a 9.8% increase in traffic on 5.8% higher capacity. The load factor gained 2.6% to 69.1%.

For the fiscal year 2005-06, the company reported an 8.6% increase in traffic on a 6.2% higher capacity. The load factor reached 80.6%, and the group reported a 6.4% growth in passengers carried to 70 million. Full-year cargo traffic grew 3.5% on 6.5% higher capacity. However, the cargo load factor was down 1.9% to 66.1%.

On the New York stock exchange, Air France-KLM shares closed Thursday's regular trading session down $0.05, at $24.38, on a volume of 4,100 shares.

Re: Chikungunya: Tourism

Total Traffic to Indian Ocean and Carribean was down 5.3% due to Chikungunya for Air France.

Well.

Even though the WHO Director General said it was ok to go to this region it seem some people have decided not to go head first into the middle of a raging storm.

I was trying to give common sense the benefit of doubt.

Heck, at least it didn't go up.
