Chikungunya spreads in Virudhunagar district

KARIAPATTI: Over 100 persons are reportedly suffering from chikungunya in Virudhunagar district and one person has died of this disease in Mallankinaru area.
For the past 10 days, more than 100 persons at Manthoppu, Vaiyampatti, Villipathiri and other villages near Mallankinaru in Virudhunagar district have been suffering from chikungunya.
Many of them have reported that they were not able to move their limbs.
The affected people from these villages have to go to the government hospital at Mallankinaru, 10 km away, for treatment. One of them, Selliah (45) of Vaiyampatti died without responding to treatment.
President of Manthoppu panchayat, Bhoominathan, said the health department was informed about the outbreak of chikungunya. Mallankinaru government hospital has 50 beds for inpatients but no one has been admitted as inpatient.
It was alleged that the doctors were refusing to admit chikungunya patients and to treat them.
