Chikungunya map

In Memoriam
The map below is based on reported suspected cases....for what it's worth. There are so many overlaping diseases, this is getting difficult.

Yellow dots are suspected cases

Red dots (2 small ones) are deaths

Green square in Tanzania, with "1" inside, is the first case in 1952

I didn't do all the villages individually - there are 162 in Maharashtra!

Dot sizes are:

smallest - < 1000 cases
small - 1000 - 10,000 cases
medium - 10,000 - 50,000 cases
large - 50,000+ cases

India (Maharashtra) - 2,500?

Re: Chikungunya map

Could you provide documentation for those DB so we can followup and see if these are tourists or if they have been in any areas where Chik is endemic? (We need the kind of detailed epidemiological work with names, locations, onset dates that Theresa42 does.)

I'd like to see the links to the news articles for a start (or where ever else you got the info).

Thanks.

Re: Chikungunya map

AlaskaDenise, excellent work! I always get it better if I can see a map or a spreadsheet.

Most numbers I got from WHO updates, others are news reports SOme numbers vary somewhat - very confusing.

I'll get back late tonight and work on it some more.

Sorry everyone, I was in a rush & made some mistakes on earlier map.

I doubled checked all my sources and fixed a couple of numbers and dots.

Chikungunya grips Kurnool
Tuesday March 14 2006 12:16 IST
<SMALL>KURNOOL: Chikungunya had spread to all the Mandals including Kurnool Corporation in the district.

Over one lakh people, mainly in rural areas of the district, fell ill due to the disease during the last one month. District Collector Vikas Raj visited Joharapuram village, which had many patients affected with the disease, on Monday and enquired about the health of the sufferers.

He instructed Kurnool Corporation Commissioner K Venkateswarlu and Health Officer Balaramaiah to prepare an action plan for checking the spread of chikungunya in the Corporation.

He instructed officials to arrange free health camps in each ward of the Corporation. He said doctors would be deputed in Kurnool town, if necessary for the medical camps.

He suggested that the patients should not consult local RMP doctors instead go to only qualified doctors for the treatment.

Re: Chikungunya map

In regards to Madagascar,

The port town of Toasmina, which sits on the east coast and is probably the closest point to La Reunion, had 80-90% of the town become infected with a dengue like disease. That would be roughly 160,000 - 180,000 people.

Right before this news became public, La Reunion said they expected 80-90% of La Reunion to become infected with Chikungunya.

Where do you think La Reunion got the 80-90%?

The map needs to be updated to show Madagascar as having 160,000+ cases.

Re: Chikungunya map updated

Re: Chikungunya map updated

Below is map udated with higher Andra Pradesh & Madagascar counts.

(Madagascar is assuming that most all the "dengue-like" disease is Chik.
