Chikungunya - Awareness Camp in Valencia
By: Violet Pereira Team Mangalorean

Mangalore June 23, 2008: The Chikungunya outbreak in Sullia and Puttur is heading towards adjacent districts including Mandya, Kasargod and Mangalore with remote cases being reported recently. The District health officer H. Jagannath speaking to the Press last week has stressed the importance of Community participation in controlling the spread of this disease.

Taking a cue from this, the St. Vincent Ferrar Church in Valencia organized a Chikungunya Awareness Camp on Sunday, June 22nd 2008 at 5p.m at their parish hall. Fr. Bonaventure Nazareth, the parish priest had earlier made announcements urging the people to attend this camp and avail of the knowledge about the prevention and symptoms of the disease. He also announced that free medicine would be distributed to 1000 people on this day. More than 1300 people attended the camp. A large number of doctors and nurses also attended the camp. Fr. Nazareth welcomed everyone to the gathering and Vice President of the Parish Council, Mrs. Flavia Sequiera presented roses to the doctors and nurses.

Dr. Shara Lobo from Valencia Parish spoke on the topic and explained through an effective power point presentation about the causes of Chikungunya disease and the precautions that can be taken to prevent this disease. She confirmed the widespread misconception that this disease cannot be acquired by eating chicken. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an airborne virus carried by the Mosquitoes known as Aedes Aegypti the virus is known as Alphavirus, that is transmitted to humans infected vector. The symptoms of Chikungunya are similar to that of Dengue and Malaria and can affect the joints of the patients persisting for weeks or months. Symptoms also include a fever up to 39C, rash of the trunk and occasionally the limbs, and arthralgia or arthritis affecting multiple joints. The incubation period of Chikungunya disease is from two to four days.

Dr. Lobo advised the people to keep their surroundings clean, in order to prevent the mosquitoes from breeding. She said this mosquito lays three hundred eggs per day and within 2 days larvae are formed, which means the Aedes mosquito is ready to fly and spread infection in a short period of time. Since the Aedes Mosquito also lays eggs in clean water, she also informed the people not to store water for more than a day.

At the end of the presentation, medicines were distributed to all the attendees. Fr. Bonaventure proposed the vote of thanks.
