Powai: As reported last week about the contaminated water and prevalence of disease around ?Saibangoda? tribal settlement in Powai, the deadly disease of ?Chikungunya? spread by mosquitoes has been reported in this part of the suburb. So far, more than 850 patients across 32 cattle shed units in the colony have reported to the health officials for treatment.

Local MLA Gajanan Kirtikar disclosed that his party workers began receiving complaints from locals eight days ago. ?Initially we organised a free medical check-up and treatment camp at the Aarey Milk Colony's Primary Health Centre located at unit number 16 on our own. But the patients' queues began to grow longer and that alarmed us'', said Kirtikar.

Some 350-odd patients from all over the Aarey Milk Colony so far have been given treatment. The worst affected being the shanty colonies of Adarsh Nagar and Gautam Nagar. Locals disclosed that the filthy conditions in some of the shanties have been the primary reason for the outbreak.

Local political workers urged the KEM Hospital authorities to set up a medical camp here. Since the past few days about 15 to 20 doctors and paramedical staff of KEM Hospital have been holding daily camps. Serious cases are either being sent to Borivali's Bhagwati Hospital or Siddhanth Hospital in Goregaon West.

Dr Jayraj Thanekar, BMC Health officer, says it is viral fever and not ?chikungunya? fever with joint pain due to intermittent rains. Dr Urmila Garg, Chief Medical Officer of Siddhanth Hospital, confirmed that patients were brought to the hospital on Thursday afternoon from the Aarey Milk Colony for treatment of this disease
