I think it is clear that this cause is going to be some sort of common bacteria (staph, strep, etc.) that doesn't produce much illness in healthy adults, but would make a premature infant extremely ill.

This is a hospital acquired bacteremia outbreak, probably due to extrinsic intravenous fluid contamination.
Such outbreaks occur when Klebsiellae tribe bacteria (Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia) contaminate glucose containing IV fluids as in Third World hospitals inadequate handling is a common practice. These outbreaks are frequent and only a few hit the media as parents gather and protest. An endemic IV fluids contamination is known and just a few professionals are aware of this. No mystery lies within... Please do not blame the babies, their mothers, the pigeons, the lack of infrastructure, the climate or the foreigners.

Thank you for the information. I had the feeling that this was common in some parts of the world, given that this had happened in that area in 2002-03, and that we had a thread indicating the same thing happened in Egypt. It is nice to have a source here who knows exactly how this occurs (and more importantly how to prevent it).

Your list of things that people blamed is pretty thorough, but I would like to add to it the IMSS staff, and the river water.

Is it possible that this last death is related to this kind of infection? Or is this just an unrelated stillbirth? Two hours from birth to death is extremely fast...

Pediatricians in Mexico prescribe admixtures of intravenous solutions...handling poses high risks while aseptic techniques and safety hoods are not used. If a previously used and contaminated solution is used to prepare fluids or dilute medication...bacteremia and shock occur immediately.
Have you read about contaminated propofol related deaths ?.. Those where adults that died in a matter of hours !

It is me that thanks you folks.
Since 1992 we have been documenting nosocomial bacteremia outbreaks and IV fluids contamination...and so far the local media and many health authorities have been quite hardheaded about our findings.
