Asheville ? Patricia Leonard, 62, a Cherokee County resident, contracted the H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, and died July 19 following her diagnosis, her daugther Raina Payne said.
Rachel Long, an epidemiologist at Mission Hospital in Asheville, confirmed Leonard tested positive for the virus. Payne said her mother also had underlying medical conditions.
?They called us on Friday and told us she tested positive, but I don?t think that is what she died from,? Payne said Tuesday afternoon. Leonard was a former Cherokee Scout columnist, former president of the Hiwassee Dam community club and 4-H leader. She loved flowering and gardening.
The state swine flu death toll has increased to five with 483 confirmed cases, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. There were 88 new cases established since July 22.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Saturday that a Transylvania County man, 55, died Friday at Transylvania Regional Hospital and had tested positive for H1N1.
Though the state is experiencing an increase in virus reports, the Center for Disease Control?s Web site says the national pandemic has decreased overall.
The Cherokee County Health Department released a statement urging the public to carry out preventative measures such as staying home if someone is experiencing flu symptoms, frequently washing hands and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
