Rat fever now endemic, number of cases peak

CHENNAI: Leptospirosis or rat fever is no longer a seasonal disease that occurs due to water stagnation after rain. The bacterial disease, which has seen a 700% increase in the last decade, is now endemic in Chennai, with cases being reported throughout the year including peak summer.
While Chennai Corporation reported 479 cases to the Directorate of Public Health this year, tests conducted by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University show 1,405 positive cases so far. When contacted, the corporation health officer refused to give the number of people affected. "There are no high numbers reported," he said. The university lab found that the number of positive cases had risen from 207 in 2001 to 1,147 in 2010. Many doctors treating infectious diseases say they have been seeing leptospirosis cases through the year.
