CHANDIGARH: A sudden spurt in the number of fever cases due to scrub typhus from the city and surrounding areas has left medical fraternity in the PGI alarmed.
"We have seen 10 to 12 positive cases from Tricity in the recent weeks. This is startling as the topography here does not permit the mite to breed," said Dr Sunil Sethi of PGI's department of medical microbiology. Scrub typhus, a zonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, has claimed many lives in HP. Common symptoms of the disease, which is also called bed bug, include fever, cough and muscle pain.

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Research (PGIMER) has recorded a sudden increase in the number of patients from the Tricity suffering Scrub typhus ? a disease usually thought to be prevalent only in the forest areas in the hills.

The hospital has received 40 confirmed cases of the disease in the month of August itself. The cases reported to PGIMER are from the urban areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. Last year, PGIMER had registered 80 such cases in August and September.
