30-year-old PGI nurse admitted to Fortis hospital

Influenza A (H1N1) has hit the city again. A PGI staff nurse has tested positive of the virus. This is the first positive case of swine flu in the city.

The 30-year-old resident of Sector 35 was admitted to Fortis hospital in Mohali where the authorities sent her blood samples to their sister concern laboratory in Gurgaon. After the tests turned out to be positive, doctors at PGI were informed. The PGI has its own testing laboratory.

The family of the nurse has been given medicine and has been quarantined.

Speaking to Newsline, Dr J C Bansal from PGI said, ?The nodal officers of our hospital have been informed and the initial precautions have been taken. All those who have shown signs of the flu have been advised to get their samples tested here.?

Meanwhile, message has been sent to all government hospitals in the city to take necessary precautions. The flu had spread last summers and till winters around 100 positive cases had been reported from the city. There were a dozen of deaths, too.

Recently, two cases from Jalandhar and Amritsar had tested positive, respectively. The doctors have warned residents to be careful and avoid physical contact at gatherings.

CHANDIGARH: Adding to the growing worry over spread of H1N1 influenza, three more cases were reported from the Tricity on Tuesday.

The first patient to test positive for swine flu was a nurse working at PGI. This case was reported from Mohali's Fortis Hospital. The other two were city residents who were admitted in PGI and Fortis on Monday.

Doctors fear that a drop in temperature would lead to increase in H1N1 cases. "A lot of patients have been complaining about flu-like symptoms. The families of those who have been confirmed for the flu have been quarantined," said an official from Fortis.

"Every time a doctor gets a patient who complains of similar signs, the advice is the same ? go for a throat swab examination. There are five to six suspected cases. Meanwhile, all five samples from GMCH-32 have come out negative," said Abha Rana, UT's nodal officer for swine flu.

Unlike the usual common cold influenza, swine flu leaves the patient feeling feeble. There is a sudden deterioration in condition as the temperature rises abruptly. "In normal viral infections, there is cough, cold and fever, which continues for a few days. But in H1N1, there are bodyaches, chills and breathlessness within a few hours," said Sarvinder Gandhok, a private medical practitioner.

H1N1 tightens grip, four more suspects


CHANDIGARH: A day after three cases of H1N1 influenza were confirmed in the city, four more patients were admitted in various Chandigarh hospitals with suspected swine flu on Wednesday. Doctors collected the throat swab samples of all four patients and sent them for tests.

UT nodal officer for swine flu Abha Rana said two cases each in Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, and PGI were reported and samples had been collected and sent to PGI's virology department. The reports are expected to be declared on Thursday.

According to officials, Chandigarh has witnessed three confirmed cases of H1N1 out of the 45 suspected ones during this season.

The assistant director, malaria NVBDCP-cum-state surveillance officer (swine flu), Dr GC Bansal said H1N1 is transmitted from person to person through infected particles in the air and, not transmitted by pigs. ''Seek medical advice if affected with symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, vomiting and difficulty in breathing,'' he added.

Issuing guidelines about protection from swine flu, Bansal said, ''Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing and sneezing.'' He added that washing hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water before and after touching nose, eyes and mouth was necessary. He also advised to avoid crowded places.

''Keep some distance from people who have cough, running nose, sneezing and fever. Sleep well, stay physically active and effectively manage stress,'' the doctor said.

CHANDIGARH: Saturday saw the first confirmed H1N1 case being reported from Panchkula this year. This takes count of Tricity's swine flu patients to four, including a recent death.

A 57-year-old resident of Panchkula was admitted in Mohali's Fortis Hospital on Friday. Panchkula district health officer Jagmal Singh said this was the first H1N1-positive case from the city. ''As of now, there is no suspected case of H1N1 in Panchkula,'' he added.

The four H1N1 patients from Tricity have been in their early 40s and late 50s. The man who died due to the flu was a 43-year-old from Sector 36, Chandigarh. ''Those with heart ailments, diabetes and low immunity are susceptible to swine flu. Children and older people are also at risk,'' said Manoj Dutta, a consultant with a private hospital in Panchkula.

The first H1N1 case from Tricity was reported on August 14. Doctors had warned that the flu could strike back with the onset of monsoon.

The change of season could lead to further escalation in cases, they added.

Last year, there were 55 patients in the region who died of swine flu; eight were from the Tricity.

Suspected swine flu patient dies in PGI


A 28-year-old man suspected to have been infected with the H1N1 influenza, died at the PGI on Sunday.

The deceased was a doctor and resident of Baddi whose swab samples had been sent for testing and the results were awaited. The man had been undergoing treatment at Barotiwala for the past few days. As his condition deteriorated he was admitted to PGI.

His relatives were reportedly told by PGI doctors to cremate the body at the earliest and not to touch it. The cremation was done at the electric crematorium.

The test results of the doctor are expected by Monday. If swine flu is confirmed, this would be the second death due to the influenza in the tricity. A 48-year-old resident of Chandigarh had passed away at Fortis Hospital on Friday where he was undergoing treatment for the influenza.

Nodal Officer for swine flu Dr Abha Rana said: ?His samples had been sent for testing. The result is likely to come by tomorrow. Only then can we confirm whether he was suffering from swine flu or not. There are other suspect cases also whose samples are being tested,? she says.

There have been three confirmed swine flu cases in the city so far. One confirmed swine flu case was reported from Panchkula on Saturday.

Last year 55 people had died in the region due to swine flu, of which eight victims had been from the tricity. A large number of deaths had been reported during the winter months.

Doctor refuses hospitalization to swine flu suspect in Haryana

Chandigarh: A lady who is suffering from swine flue, was shown the doors of general hospital, Fatehabad by hospital staff. Not only this, the doctors also denied to treat her. According to the information Gurnam Singh 60, died on past month because of swine flue in Mohhamadpur Rohi, his sister Kulwant Kaur and Mahender Kaur accompanied him without taking any precautions, hence they also received the flue virus.
