Chad reports meningitis outbreak: Chad’s health ministry reported 993 suspected cases of meningococcal disease, including 57 deaths, between 1 January and 6 March 2011. The World Health Organization said that 752 000 doses of bivalent A/C polysaccharide meningococcal vaccine are being provided for a mass vaccination campaign in the five affected districts in the southern region of Logone Occidental

This bulletin is being issued for information only and reflects the current situation and details available at this time. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is not seeking funding or other assistance from donors for this operation. The Red Cross of Chad will, however, accept direct assistance to provide support to the affected population.

Summary: Since 18 March, 2011, 28 out of the 61 districts of Chad have been facing measles, meningitis, and cholera epidemics, with cases reaching alarming levels. A total of 2,236 cases have been registered, of which 131 deaths were confirmed according to preliminary reports sent by volunteers from the regional Red Cross committees. Despite their limited financial resources, volunteers were mobilized to assess, sensitize, and refer suspected cases to health centres. Local Red Cross committees in the affected areas are planning to provide support to the affected communities through the rapid training of their volunteers to enable them to carry out mass sensitization campaigns, distribution of hygiene kits and support to local health centres. A joint assessment mission was carried out by the Red Cross national office and the Ministry of Health. Findings showed that the situation verges on catastrophe and is in need of urgent intervention.

CHF 73,950 has been allocated from the IFRC?s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 650,000 beneficiaries in the areas affected by meningitis. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

From the 1st of January to the 20th of March 2,085 cases of meningitis and 124 deaths have been recorded in Chad. So far, in 2011, Chad remains the most meningitis affected country in the African meningitis belt and the NmA strain remains the dominant pathogen?treatable with standard vaccines. The most affected regions are located in the south of the country. Joint assessment missions were carried out by the Red Cross of Chad national office and the Chadian Health Ministry. Findings showed that the situation verges on catastrophe and is in need of urgent intervention.

Overview

The first quarter of this year has been marked by the prevalence of epidemics: cholera, measles and meningitis. A total of 2,776 persons have been affected by meningitis with 144 deaths, 2,683 by measles with 14 deaths and around 290 cases of cholera with 14 deaths. The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the health cluster coordinates the prevention and riposte activities.
