PUNE: The outbreaks of newer viruses, such as the viruses of SARS, avian influenza and the H1N1, in recent years has prompted Union government to set up a network of 140 virology labs across the country. The move is aimed at bridging the shortage of laboratories dedicated to early detection and diagnosis of viral infections. The task of setting up the three-tier system of virology labs in a phased manner has been entrusted to Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV).
"This is a great step towards a surveillance system for early detection and diagnosis of viruses. The move is expected to enhance health research in a big way," A C Mishra, director of NIV, told TOI on Thursday.
