Centre/States/WHO meet on JE eradication strategy on Dec 11

As the five-year plan for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Control in India will end in December, the Centre is in the process of planning the strategy for the next five years ? from 2011 to 2015 ? for eradication of the disease.



In its attempt to identify gaps in the current strategy for the three main affected states ? Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam ? the Centre has decided to call a consultation meet of experts. In the meet to be held in December 11, experts from these three state, along with officials from the Centre and other stakeholders, like WHO, will participate. This meeting, which will take place Kushinagar district ? one of the worst affected districts along with Gorakhpur, Siddharthanagar and Basti ? will be chaired by Dr R K Srivastava, Director General (Union Health Services).



Moreover, experts from National Institute of Virology and National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme have been invited to make presentations on issues related to vaccination, gaps in identification of the viruses, etc.

He added: ?While we were successful in identifying some of the entero-viruses as the cause for non-JE cases, but even these entero-viruses contribute to only 2 per cent of total non-JE cases. Thus, the situation in UP is being reviewed at the highest level.?

LUCKNOW: Even as the immunisation drive to curb the menace of encephalitis in eastern districts of UP has taken off, people of the area are not happy. On Sunday, under the aegis of a local pressure group, affected families of Maharajganj wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, calling for a dedicated eradication programme.

The pressure group offers a strategy called NEEP or national encephalitis eradication programme. "This comes with a ten-point agenda, fulfilment of which would save many children from untimely death,'' said Dr Singh. The points include: aerial fogging, vaccination, relocation of pigs that are the main host of viruses causing encephalitis, elaborate care and management facilities, prevention and surveillance among others.
