Farwell athlete hospitalized with meningitis

FARWELL (WJRT) -- (05/27/10) -- A case of bacterial meningitis involving a Farwell Middle School athlete has been reported.

The Morning Sun newspaper reports the teen is on life support at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw.

Matthew Meyers, 14, was diagnosed with the infection Sunday.

His last full activity was a track meet Friday at Gladwin High School where more than 200 students from eight different schools competed.

Meyers rode the bus there and drove home with his dad.

The Central Michigan District Health Department has posted a letter on the Farwell School District's Web site explaining the situation.

The health department says it's still looking into how Meyers got the infection and encourages anybody with questions to call 989-539-6731...
