Four men with no history of traveling abroad are the new confirmed cases of monkeypox in Costa Rica, confirmed Salud, whose record already adds 23 positives since the previous July.

In the morning hours, two Costa Ricans were reported, a 25-year-old man who started symptoms on November 8, and a 39-year-old man whose symptoms began to manifest on October 31.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of Health reported two more patients: a 23-year-old from Heredia, as well as a 25-year-old from San José.

"The Ministry of Health maintains the monitoring of the corresponding clinical evolution, direct contacts, traceability and isolation. Likewise, a call is made to the population that in case of detecting lesions in the body or in the event of any symptom, go to the health services and not have direct contact with anyone," the entity said in a press release.

In recent weeks, the number of confirmed monkeypox cases has accelerated. The authorities indicated that it is not yet possible to speak of a community contagion. In addition, monitoring is maintained in cuarterías in the center of the capital, where outbreaks have occurred.

"The most common symptom associated with monkeypox are pimple-like or blister-like skin lesions, which can be painful or itchy, appear anywhere on the body, but more frequently on the genital, perianal, face, hands, and feet. El Salvador registers 40 cases of mpox, of which at least 10 are active, and for the moment no deaths have been reported, an official source said on Monday.

Of the total number of cases registered to date, only one corresponds to a woman and the rest of the infections have occurred in men, explained the head of the Ministry of Health (Minsal), Francisco Alabí, in an interview on a local channel.

The official pointed out that the age range of the infected people oscillates between 30 and 50 years, and added that so far "there is no lethality, nor complication due to the smallpox of the monkey".

He added that "none of the infections has occurred near the family circle of the person who has developed the disease."

Five months of monkeypox in Costa Rica: Is there local transmission?

This Monday marks five months since the Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of monkeypox in Costa Rica, on July 12.

In the weeks prior to this date, there has been an increase in confirmed cases, of which the most recent stand out, since they did not have a history of departure, unlike the first, whose contagion could be identified by a history of travel abroad.

Precisely for this reason, many people now wonder if it can currently be determined that there is a local transmission of the simian virus in Costa Rica.

José Aaron Agüero, a specialist from the Department of Health Surveillance, acknowledges that, indeed, there was a "significant" increase in diagnosed patients, the total of which now amounts to 47 positives, with an average of three to four cases per week.

However, the conditions of each case and, therefore, the contagion that originated them, are very different from each other.

"At the moment it is a transmission that is being generated like any other new disease, that at the beginning there are few cases and it is increasing little by little. The work between institutions has increased their efforts for the detection, confirmation and isolation of the cases. Still We cannot indicate that it is transmission that is occurring locally, but each case and its contacts are being investigated, and not all of these contacts have come out positive, so it is a little early to confirm it," he said.

The first cases diagnosed in Costa Rica were people who traveled abroad or who had contact with a person who did. However, the latest cases have no known history of exit.

That is why the experts reiterate the importance that research efforts on the transmission of monkeypox in the country now have. However, they point out that this work is progressing at a slow pace.

"When there is a longer period of time, we will be able to identify if the determinants define that the transmission is local," said Agüero.

Currently, 10 of the 47 cases remain in isolation, in the process of having the skin lesions removed. In addition, according to Salud, 100% of the patients in Costa Rica have been men and all are in an age range between 22 and 72 years.

The institution, despite the number of patients, describes the care of this pathology as successful and continues to insist on its call to visit a health service immediately in case of noticing the presence of symptoms.

MINSAL data indicates that as of January 7, 79 patients with the disease had been confirmed.

In the first week of 2023, the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) confirmed 10 new cases of monkeypox, a disease that since last year began to affect countries where it is not endemic, including El Salvador.

After six weeks of silence, the MINSAL published the 2023 epidemiological bulletin on Thursday, corresponding to the period between January 1 and 7. The preliminary information, delivered by 95.3% of the units that must provide their data to the ministry, indicates that in that period there were at least 10 new patients with the disease.

In this way, since August 30, 2022 - when the first patient was confirmed - and until January 7, the health authorities have detected 79 people with this condition.

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS.- The health region of the Departmental Islands of the Bay confirmed a new case of monkey smallpox in the municipality of Roatán.

The authorities detailed that the detected positive case corresponds to an adult male who is currently under surveillance, in symptomatic treatment, isolation and in stable condition.

“Currently the close contacts of the case are under investigation and under surveillance for laboratory sample collection and early detection of more cases. Monkeypox is a viral disease that can be transmitted by close or close physical contact between a confirmed infected person and a healthy person, and in view of the detection of this first case in the Bay Islands, surveillance of this disease has been intensified," they informed through a statement.

Likewise, they recommend to the general population that in cases of travelers coming from countries with reports of Monkeypox contact the International Sanitary Office (OSI), if they have fever or symptoms suggestive of the disease, go to the nearest health facility. , practice physical distancing, frequent hand washing with soap and water, frequent use of a mask, cook food thoroughly, especially meat, seafood, and eggs.

The authorities also request the Mayor's Office, commerce, factories and public and non-public institutions to provide all the collaboration and abide by the aforementioned indications.


To date, Honduras registers at least 14 cases of monkeypox since the first case was reported on August 12, 2022.

The symptoms of this viral disease are headache, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, nasal congestion, and skin rash.
