Costa Rica confirms first case of monkeypox

The Ministry of Health confirmed today the first case of simian smallpox, a 34-year-old man from the United States who has resided in Costa Rica for two years. He entered the country last week from a trip abroad and is considered an imported case.

“Unfortunately, we have the first case of monkeypox in Costa Rica,” said Josselyn Chacón, Minister of Health.

According to the Ministry of Health, the patient went to a private health center on July 17 due to health problems and was admitted on July 19 when he presented lesions on his tonsils compatible with monkeypox.

Therefore, the sample was taken and sent to the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Education in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA), which confirmed the diagnosis by performing a real-time PCR test for this disease.

Additionally, the health authorities indicated that the person was stable, and an isolation order was issued for 21 days, according to the general guidelines for Smallpox Surveillance. He will be followed up according to his clinical evolution. The Ministry of Health also follows up with five people living in the same house.

According to data from the Health Surveillance Directorate, two new positive cases of monkeypox were confirmed today, totaling three positive cases of this disease.

The first patient is a 34-year-old foreigner who resides in Costa Rica. He had been on a trip abroad and returned to the country last week. It was reported on July 20 and is considered an imported case.

In addition, the second confirmed case is directly related to the first one. A 31-year-old Costa Rican in direct contact with the first case was infected with the virus.

Meanwhile, the third case is unrelated to the previous two; it involves a 42-year-old Colombian (nationalized Costa Rican) man who had traveled to Spain.

The latter two cases were diagnosed using a PCR test through the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS)...

Honduras records first case of monkeypox in man under 50 years old

Tegucigalpa, Aug 12 (EFE).- A man under 50 years of age became the first Honduran to have contracted monkeypox this Friday, the Minister of Health, José Manuel Matheu, informed Efe.

For reasons of "confidentiality, we cannot provide more information", but it is about a Honduran who "lives in Tegucigalpa, who is already isolated and has been surrounded by epidemiological contacts. The case has been confirmed with laboratory tests" he added.

The patient "has no discomfort, he is in good condition" and tomorrow the people around him will be tested.

The senior official indicated that Honduras has today become the 25th country in the Americas and the 86th in the world with cases of monkeypox.

Matheu pointed out that the population must implement all biosecurity measures because the disease is transmitted through secretions and direct contact with the skin.

People should wear a mask, keep social distance and avoid crowds, he added.

Any person who contracts monkeypox must make exclusive use of his utensils, personal clothing must be washed and if he uses the bathroom, it must be disinfected immediately.

Personnel dealing with infected patients must wear a mask, face shield and gloves, the Honduran Minister of Health said.

Also known as monkeypox, the World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared it a health emergency due to the number of countries that have contagion of the disease.

TEGUCIGALPA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Honduras has registered a total of four cases of monkeypox after one more case was detected in a man under 30 from the country's Central District, said the Health Ministry on Monday.

Lorenzo Pavon, head of the Health Surveillance Unit, told local media that the patient was in stable condition, quarantined at home and monitored by the health authorities.

The previous three patients recovered from the disease after being quarantined, Pavon said.

"All four cases are male patients who have not required hospitalization, (but) had fever and swollen glands, as well as skin rashes," he said...

Honduras Adds Six Confirmed Cases of Monkeypox

Tegucigalpa, Sep 20 (EFE) .- The Honduran health authorities reported two new monkeypox infections on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases of the disease in the Central American country to six.

"Effectively today two more monkeypox patients are being confirmed," the head of the Health Surveillance Unit, Lorenzo Pavón, told reporters.

He pointed out that the new cases were presented in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, and they are two men between 20 and 29 years old.

"The two patients have epidemiological links in common, so epidemiological fences are being made so that no more cases occur in their relatives and in their circle of work or friends," he explained.

Honduras registers a positivity rate of 15%, said Pavón, who asked the population to observe all sanitary measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Through social networks, the Ministry of Health announced this Sunday a new case of monkeypox in the country. This is the fifth officially reported case of the disease. The only thing that is known so far is what was posted on the ministry's official Twitter account.

The fifth case is a 51-year-old man, who is not related to the previous cases, according to Health.

In mid-September, medical specialists warned that the virus that causes monkeypox is already in the community spread phase in El Salvador.

The term community spread means that people in an area have been infected by a virus, including some who don't know or are sure how or where they got infected.

"That means that the virus is already circulating in the country, it no longer comes from outside, it is not contagion from being close to a relative who came from another country," said epidemiologist Alfonso Rosales.

Interviewed in the middle of the month, Rosales considered that "there must already be more infections in the country, and that many may not consult because of astigmatism attributed to the disease."

He added that "Diseases are stigmatized due to ignorance, due to lack of information, and that is where the Ministry of Health should be acting."

The symptoms related to a possible contagion of monkeypox are: fever, intense headache, swollen lymph nodes (throat area), muscle pain, exhaustion and blister-like lesions on the skin (it may be just one to be alert).

El Salvador accumulates seven cases of monkeypox

The Ministry of Health of El Salvador reported today (09.29.2022) of two new cases of monkeypox in the national territory, bringing the total to seven patients to date.

San José, Oct 3 (EFE).- The Costa Rican Ministry of Health reported Monday that the country has six cases of monkeypox, the last of which was confirmed in a 51-year-old Costa Rican who traveled abroad.

The Ministry of Health explained that the patient entered Costa Rica last week, so he is considered an imported case of monkeypox.

The patient consulted at a health center on September 27 and was diagnosed this Monday through the result of a PCR test carried out by the state-run Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (Inciensa).

San José, Oct 20 (EFE).- The Costa Rican Ministry of Health confirmed this Thursday the eighth case of monkeypox in the country, which corresponds to a 34-year-old foreign man who has not suffered serious complications in his Health.

Official information indicates that on October 9 the patient began symptoms such as headache, arthralgia, fever, chills, fatigue, skin rash, cough and nasal congestion, and that he is not currently hospitalized.

"The Ministry of Health maintains the follow-up of the corresponding clinical evolution, direct contacts, traceability and isolation," the entity detailed.

The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in El Salvador has increased to 15, two more than those reported as of October 25, the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) reported yesterday.

"There were 13 (in the last update), it has increased. We currently have 15 cases of monkeypox in the territory," said the head of Health, Francisco Alabi, in the interview Face to Face, from the Salvadoran Telecorporation (TCS).

The bulletin for epidemiological week 41 (October 9 to 15) reported 13 confirmed cases at that time since the first contagion was detected, at the end of August. QCOSTARICA – The Ministry of Health reported on Friday that the country has recorded a total of 14 cases of monkeypox since July when the first contagion was announced.

Precisely this Friday, Health authorities announced six new cases, which were diagnosed in the last three days.

These are six men between the ages of 30 and 48, who are not hospitalized. They were issued the respective health order for their due isolation.
