Epizootic decimates pig herd in Carnot

By Corbeaunews-September 4, 2024

For over a month, a mysterious disease has been affecting the pig population in Carnot, the capital of the Mambéré prefecture. This epizootic is causing unprecedented mortality among pigs, plunging farmers into disarray.

Bangui , September 5, 2024.
By the editorial staff of Corbeau News Centrafrique.

In the markets and on the streets of the city, women and children can be seen offering pork at low prices . A situation that worries health authorities, who fear a spread of the disease.

Felix Domoyogo , a farmer in the Monument district near the airfield, is sounding the alarm:

“Our pigs have been dying en masse for over a month. I have already lost about 15 pigs. It is thanks to this breeding that we are able to feed our families and educate our children. The Ministry of Livestock must intervene urgently to stop this epidemic.”

The local veterinary services seem overwhelmed by the scale of this disease which is decimating the pig population in Carnot. For the moment, they are content to prescribe antibiotics, without any real effectiveness.

Breeders are calling for strong action from national authorities to stem this crisis that threatens an entire economic sector. The Minister of Livestock is called to visit the site to assess the extent of the damage and take measures.

In the meantime, the population is urged to be extremely vigilant in the consumption of pork, the origin and health quality of which cannot currently be guaranteed in Carnot, following this disease which is affecting the pig herd in Carnot.
