The issue of Ebola virus disease being imported into the Central African Republic remains a concern. This was emphasized by the Ministry of Public Health and Population during its weekly conference held on August 8, 2026, at the Health Information and Documentation Center.
This meeting with the media is always aimed at addressing the concerns of the population and providing them with the necessary information on the evolution of the situation, the measures taken to prevent the importation of a case of Ebola, as well as on the current cholera situation in the Central African Republic.
Hosted by health experts, including Dr. Pierre Somsé, Minister of Public Health and Population, Professor Emmanuel Nakouné, Director General of the Pasteur Institute of Bangui, and Dr. Parfait Constant Séboulou, Director of Primary Healthcare at the Ministry of Health, the program garnered significant listener participation. Callers from various parts of the country expressed their concerns, particularly regarding preventative measures and the appropriate course of action in the event of a suspected Ebola case in the Mboki, Zémio, Obo, and Bambouti regions.
During this conference, health officials reiterated that the Central African Republic remains vigilant against the threat of Ebola virus disease in neighboring countries. They reassured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to strengthen border surveillance, prepare healthcare facilities, and prevent any introduction of the virus into the country, particularly in the Obo, Zémio, Mboki, and Bambouti regions. However,
no cases of Ebola virus disease have yet been recorded in the Central African Republic.
In his address, Dr. Pierre Somsé emphasized:
“The threat is worsening in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the epidemic continues to increase exponentially. Today, the country has a total of 4,053 cumulative cases, including 1,850 deaths, 793 recoveries, and 694 patients hospitalized. In the Haut-Uélé region, 6 out of 13 districts are affected.
Furthermore, the epidemic is steadily advancing northward, particularly toward the Haut-Mbomou prefecture, which borders Haut-Uélé.”
“The front line of the epidemic is approaching. It’s not a question of distance, since population movements between the Haut-Mbomou prefecture and the DRC are intense, with daily movements making these areas a single living space shared by the populations of Haut-Mbomou, the DRC, and South Sudan. Our priority is to intensify and accelerate our preparedness.
We have installed a new, high-security laboratory in Obo, and deployed a medical team to the three most exposed localities in Haut-Mbomou. Furthermore, in the coming days, we will deploy multidisciplinary teams addressing various aspects and themes of the response, in order to engage medical personnel, the population, and community leaders,” he stated.
Regarding cholera, health personnel report having brought the disease under control. “We have no new locally transmitted cases, following a very aggressive response we conducted with the support of all our partners. Today, the country has a total of 728 cases, including 48 deaths, 16 of which occurred in hospitals. 698 cases are currently being treated, of which 682 have recovered. With the support of our international partners, we also received 600,000 doses of vaccine last Tuesday, and the vaccination campaign will begin in the coming days.”
He added: "With the support of MINUSCA, WHO and the government, there will be an important [meeting] by next week with ministers from border countries, including the DRC, South Sudan, Uganda and Congo, to strengthen cross-border cooperation," he concluded.
It should be noted that in closing the discussions, the ministry officials called on Central Africans to remain vigilant, to respect preventive measures and to collaborate with health services in order to limit the spread of diseases with epidemic potential.
