CDC & White House Media Briefings on Swine Flu Epidemic

Re: CDC director's update brief 7/28/09

Re: CDC director's update brief 7/28/09

Interesting.

Their numbers on Argentina are very dated: > 3000 cases, 137 deaths.

FT just reported today that there are over 215 deaths in Argentina.

I must say, I was underwhelmed by that presentation. Really no useful content in it that I could see.

Re: CDC director's update brief 7/28/09

A lot of their data is somewhat dated which I find surprising given their resources and access. It shouldn't take more than 1 full time person to keep those numbers updated at least to the day. Dr. Niman keeps a better tally than they do and he presumably has far fewer resources and access.

Thanks for posting this, Zac.

It is good to see solid, fact based reporting for a change instead of the media hype. I know some folks might like to see more, but the story is what it is, and nothing more at this stage.

Let's all hope it stays that way!!!

This kind of problem is inherent in any bureaucracy, which an organization of that size must be. Every statement that is made has to be based on information that has come up through specified channels, being confirmed and verified at each step. This builds delay into the system. For us, if we make a mistake we say "oops" and go on, but in a bureaucracy a misstatement could be career-limiting.

For us, if we make a mistake we say "oops" and go on, but in a bureaucracy a misstatement should always be blamed on an underling. :)

Thanks for posting Zac. I like the look of the proposed new website. It looks as though graphical information will be more available to people casually visiting the site.

Let us know if you find one. They don't seem to be so easy to find anymore. All existing ones on Astho.org are no longer available either.

Re: CDC director's update brief 7/31/09

I don't know if our posting the link made them go away. But, in the future, I would suggest just posting the PDF and not the link unless it's from one of the leak sites such as wikileaks or cryptome.

Thanks for posting the recent updates. I like seeing they are thinking about businesses also. I am also glad to see in the 8/7 update they will also focus on increasing awareness of pregnancy risk.
