CDC warns of Ebola 'catastrophe' in Sierra Leone (Video)

Re: CDC warns of Ebola 'catastrophe' in Sierra Leone (Video)

I thought Liberia was the one in bad shape. Weren't Sierra Leone's numbers looking better; relatively. What am I saying, those reported numbers are probably only an indication of data capture, and bed count expansion, and nothing to do with what's really on the streets.

Just surprised he picked Sierra Leone...

I think... Maybe they know its too late for Liberia. The way the numbers look I don't think they can avoid a catastrophe anymore

After seeing that video, I just don't see temperature screening doing any good at all. For starters, those infrared thermometers measure surface temperature only. The skin is typically cooler than true body temperature, so most of those readings likely underestimate body temperature. Also, distance from the surface matters. Anyway, without getting to detailed about it, it appears that either the government doesn't realize that is not a reliable method of screening people, or they are just doing what they can so that they are doing something rather than nothing. A lot of what is going on now seems to be aimed at avoiding panic and the accompanying chaos, which will further spread ebola. It is a heartbreaking situation.

I also wonder why 'HCW' wear a mask and don't cover their nose. What is the point? I have seen a lot of pictures and videos of HCWs not wearing PPEs correctly. I have no faith in the 'screening' procedures I have seen.

A lot of the PPE is uncomfortable and ill fitting, so even people trained to use it properly will take shortcuts or make mistakes. For ebola, an N95 mask won't do much good anyway because the most likely paths of exposure are skin or mucous membrane contact, not inhalation. One also has to match the PPE to the risk. For example, it does little good to wear gloves, if the face isn't covered and someone touches their face with a contaminated glove.

I've been thinking that disease control efforts need to concentrate their limited resources in countries bordering countries already out of control. That may be Tom Frieden's strategy here, (ring vaccination without the vaccine.) It is too late to control disease in the out of control countries. All you can do there is treatment and humanitarian relief.

...

Dr. Frieden was shown on SLBC Television as he firmly warned the country only has ?hours and not days? within which the President should take adequate steps to stem the ravaging Ebola virus transmission.

Further, Dr. Frieden has now very publicly predicted to President Koroma that Freetown will follow suit of Monrovia if the President did not act fast...
