CDC Safety Training Course for Healthcare Workers Going to West Africa in Response to the 2014 Ebola Outbreak

HOW CAN I HELP?

Medical volunteers who would like to provide assistance with the West Africa Ebola outbreak can find more information on USAID's website: http://www.usaid.gov/ebola/volunteers

As part of a comprehensive and coordinated response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is developing an introductory training course for licensed clinicians (e.g., nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers) intending to work in an Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) in Africa. This course will take place in the United States. The primary purpose of the course is to ensure that clinicians intending to provide medical care to patients with Ebola have sufficient knowledge of the disease and its transmission routes to work safely and efficiently in a well-designed ETU. This course is the first step in preparing clinicians to work independently in an ETU. It is strongly recommended that, after completing this training, clinicians receive mentoring and coaching in an ETU designated for such training in an affected country, only then progressing to fully independent work in an ETU. The CDC course contains information from similar courses developed by M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and is primarily designed to provide training for persons intending to deploy urgently in response to the current Ebola outbreak.

Who should take this course?

What will the course cover?

  • Lectures on Ebola transmission, epidemiology, and prevention
  • Small-group exercises on patient triage and working safely in an ETU
  • Practical ?hands-on? exercises conducted in PPE which simulate patient care activities

Who will teach this course?

The course will be taught by CDC staff medical epidemiologists, advanced infection preventionists (IPs), MSF personnel, and other trained professionals. Each course session will include staff with recent direct experience with Ebola patients in West Africa. (No actual Ebola patients and no persons with either low-risk or high-risk exposures to Ebola will participate.)

When and where will the course be held?

The 3-day course will run each Monday thru Wednesday, beginning October 6, 2014, for the next 3 months (the course will be suspended during weeks containing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year?s Day holidays; the course may also be suspended intermittently for 1-week periods to revise course content and delivery). Depending on demand, the course may be offered for a period longer than 3 months.
Tentative course dates for the first ten course sessions are:
