The CDC researcher who mysteriously vanished had recently been passed over for a promotion, police say

By Alex Horton February 28 at 11:29 AM
...
Police have searched nearby woods with dogs, canvassed hospitals and jails, reviewed cellphone records, looked in cemeteries and even flown over the immediate area with a helicopter looking for signs of life ? or worse.
...
But the search is now in its third week, and police do not appear to be any closer to finding signs of Cunningham alive or dead. There is ?no evidence suggesting anything,? O'Connor said, exasperated.
...
The CDC did not identify any problems with his job performance or workplace issues beyond the promotion denial, O'Connor said.
...
?He had no access to classified material,? O'Connor said. ?He would not be of the type of person that, if you kidnapped him and held him, he could give you access to some horrific virus that could be a real problem for all the rest of us.?
...
?The most unusual factor in this case is that every single belonging that we are aware of was located in the residence,? O'Connor told reporters on Tuesday. ?His keys, his cellphone, credit cards, debit cards, wallet, all of his identification, passports. Anything you could think of, we've been able to locate. None of those items are missing.?
...
?Dr. Cunningham's colleagues and friends at CDC hope that he is safe,? CDC spokeswoman Kathy Harben told The Post. ?We want him to return to his loved ones and his work ? doing what he does best as a CDC disease detective ? protecting people's health.?

Statement To The Media From Acting CDC Director RADM Anne Schuchat, MD

Media Statement
For Immediate Release: Monday, March 12, 2018
Contact: Media Relations (404) 639-3286

Today marks one month since Commander (CDR) Timothy Cunningham was last seen, and we have not given up hope that he will soon be found. If Tim reads this message, we hope you come home soon. If anyone reading this has information about the whereabouts of Commander Cunningham, please come forward.

There has been news coverage that Commander Cunningham recently did not receive a promotion. As many of his colleagues in the USPHS have pointed out, this information is incorrect. In fact, he received an early promotion/exceptional proficiency promotion to Commander effective July 1, 2017, in recognition of his exemplary performance in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). Over and above any of his assignments at CDC, his early promotion within the USPHS reflects his excellence as an officer and an employee.

CDC continues to work closely with the family, Atlanta Police Department, and others in the continuing search for CDR Cunningham. If you have any information which could be helpful, please call 9-1-1 or the Atlanta Police Department at 404-546-4235.

Does anyone understand what his work in the Epidemiological Intelligence Unit actually entailed?

According to the research he did, he was primarily interested in chronic illnesses and lifestyle and social factors that influence those diseases. It's really a shame that he is missing - those diseases have a huge impact in the U.S.

There is more background below. He has researched emerging diseases, too.

...Cunningham is a respected epidemiologist with the CDC and has worked on viruses like Ebola and Zika. The Cunninghams have refuted online conspiracy theorists that have speculated that their son was involved in or knew of something through his work that might have made him a target.
Despite early media interest in the case, as it usually happens, the media moves on. What that means for the Cunninghams is that as time goes on, the interest and therefore the resources given to their case, wanes. Since March 13, there has not been a single searchable story about Cunningham, but he?s still missing.
If you can help, please call 911 or the Atlanta Police Department at 404-546-4235.

Harvard-educated epidemiologist Dr. Timothy Cunningham had a lot going for him.
?Tim was always the golden boy,? says a colleague at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where Cunningham prominently studied heath patterns related to race, gender and geography. For his work, the Atlanta Business Chronicle featured the 35-year-old last October as one of its ?40-Under-40? rising stars in the region...

Missing CDC worker Timothy Cunningham likely drowned, no signs of foul play: Officials

By EMILY SHAPIRO Apr 5, 2018, 2:15 PM ET
...
The body of Timothy Cunningham, 35, was found Tuesday night along the bank of the Chattahoochee River, according to the Atlanta Police Department, after people fishing saw a body and called 911.

There were no signs of foul play and the preliminary cause of death is drowning, the medical examiner said.

The manner of death has not been determined at this time, the medical examiner said.

"We may never be able to tell you how he got into the river," Maj. Michael O'Connor of the Atlanta Police told reporters today.

It's not clear where Cunningham entered the river, which had been previously searched, officials said.

CDC Epidemiologist Found Dead Weeks After Going Missing, Drowning Suspected

April 5, 20186:11 PM ET
...
Fulton County Medical Examiner Jan Gorniak said the cause of death is "probably" drowning. But tests, including a toxicology screening, are still pending.

Gorniak added that the condition of Cunningham's body is "consistent" with having been in the water since the day he went missing and that there were no signs of trauma or underlying medical conditions.
...
And yet many questions remain unanswered.

Police do not know, for example, how Cunningham's body got onto the banks of the river.

The area ? not far from Cunningham's home ? was inaccessible by walking, police said, noting they struggled to find a place to launch a boat to reach his remains.

"We do know that he was a jogger and he was wearing his favorite jogging shoes at the time that he was found," O'Connor said. "I can't tell you that he was jogging, but those two things together seem to indicate that that's a possibility."

O'Connor said three crystals were in his pocket for unknown reasons, although Cunningham was an avid rock collector.

Missing CDC employee's death reportedly ruled a suicide

By Elizabeth Zwirz | Fox News

The body of missing CDC worker Timothy Cunningham was found in Atlanta's Chattahoochee River with no signs of foul play.

The death of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) employee, who was reported missing earlier this year before his body turned up in a Georgia river, was reportedly ruled a suicide by the medical examiner?s office.

Timothy Cunningham?s killed himself by drowning, Dr. Jan Gorniak, the Fulton County chief medical examiner, told The Associated Press Tuesday.

Evidence from the tests also indicated that Cunningham had used marijuana, Gorniak said, however that was not believed to be connected to his death.
