These numbers are expected to change as the investigation continues. Based on epidemiologic investigation of 19 cases:
  • 12 (63%) ill people are women​
  • All people are ages 18 or older, ranging from 25 ? 71 years​
  • Illness onset dates range from 4/29/2013 ? 5/17/2013​
  • 9 (47%) ill people have been hospitalized​
  • 11 (65%) of 17 ill people interviewed reported eating ?Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend,? a frozen berry and pomegranate seed mix​
  • 11 persons who have provided purchase information reported purchasing this product from ?Costco? markets; however, investigations are ongoing to determine if this product was sold at other stores or venues.​
  • Investigation by state health departments, FDA, and CDC is ongoing. Costco is notifying its members who purchased this product since late February 2013, and has removed this product from its shelves
  • Preliminary laboratory studies of specimens from two cases suggest the outbreak strain of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is genotype 1B. This strain is rarely seen in the Americas but circulates in the North Africa and Middle East regions.
  • This genotype was identified in a 2013 outbreak in Europe linked to frozen berries and another 2012 outbreak in British Columbia related to a frozen berry blend with pomegranate seeds from Egypt.​
  • According to the label, The Townsend Farms Organic Anti-oxidant Blend frozen berry mix associated with illness contained pomegranate seeds and other produce from the US, Argentina, Chile, and Turkey.​

Advice to Consumers



1. Do not eat ?Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend? and discard any remaining product from your freezers.


  • Even if some of the product has been eaten without anyone in your home becoming ill, the rest of the product should be discarded


2. Hepatitis A vaccination can prevent illness if given within two weeks of exposure to the contaminated product.



  • If you consumed this product in the last two weeks and have never been vaccinated, contact your health care provider to find out if you should be vaccinated. If you don?t have a health care provider (usually your doctor) contact your health department. You can find health department contact information at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/international/relres.htm​
  • If you have already received the hepatitis A vaccination in the past, you are unlikely to become ill with the disease​


3. Contact your health care provider right away if you develop any of these symptoms:


  • Yellow eyes or skin​
  • Abdominal pain​
  • Pale stools​
  • Dark urine​

4. You can prevent cross-contamination in food preparation areas by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water, and disinfect counters, cutting boards, and cooking utensils after use

5. Wash your hands thoroughly right after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing, serving, or eating food.

Signs and symptoms of HAV infection

  • Illness occurs within 15 ? 50 days of exposure and symptoms can includes fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stool.​
  • Hepatitis A is a human disease and usually occurs when an infected food handler prepares food without appropriate hand hygiene. However, food contaminated with HAV, as is suspected in this outbreak, can cause outbreaks of disease among persons who eat or handle food.​
  • In rare cases, particularly in patients with pre-existing severe illness or immune compromise, HAV infection can progress to liver failure and death. Persons with underlying liver conditions should be vaccinated.​

The product is a blend of cherries, blueberries, pomegranate seeds, raspberries and strawberries. Costco has removed this product from its shelves, but has not yet issued a formal recall.

...Colorado public health officials say three women and two men in the state, from ages 35 to 71, were stricken with hepatitis A. They are from Adams, Boulder, Clear Creek and Jefferson Counties...".

Costco is offering free hepatitis A shots in the outbreak traced to an Oregon berry processor.

A company spokesman said Thursday that Costco will reimburse the price of vaccine or administer shots for free to customers who purchased Organic Antioxidant Blend of frozen fruit, produced by Townsend Farms in Fairview

The hepatitis A vaccine costs about $120 per dose, and usually two doses are needed...

CDC is collaborating with public health officials in several states and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Hepatitis A illnesses. Preliminary results from the ongoing investigation are highlighted below.

  • As of June 20, 2013, 113 people have been confirmed to have become ill from Hepatitis A after eating ?Townsend Farms Organic Anti-oxidant Blend? in 7 states: Arizona (15), California (57), Colorado (23), Hawaii (5), New Mexico (5), Nevada (5), and Utah (3).
  • 67 (59%) ill people are women
  • Ages range from 2 ? 84 years;
    • 69 (61%) of those ill were between 40 ? 64 years of age.​
    • Currently, 5 children under age 18 have been infected as part of this outbreak; of these, none were hospitalized, and none were previously vaccinated.

The number of confirmed illnesses part of the multistate Hepatitis A outbreak linked to Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxident Berry Blend continues to creep up. On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that there are now 122 confirmed cases, up two cases from the previous day and three more than the agency had confirmed on Monday. This week the outbreak also went from affecting 7 states to affecting 8, Wisconsin being the latest addition...

  • Illness onset dates range from 3/31/2013 ? 6/24/2013


Laboratory Investigation:

  • The outbreak strain of hepatitis A virus, belonging to genotype 1B, was found in clinical specimens of 56 people in seven states: AZ (6), CA (15), CO (22), HI (4), NM (4), NV (4) and WI (1; the person was exposed in California). This genotype is rarely seen in the Americas but circulates in North Africa and the Middle East.
  • This genotype was identified in a 2013 outbreak of hepatitis A virus infections in Europe linked to frozen berries and a 2012 outbreak in British Columbia related to a frozen berry blend with pomegranate seeds from Egypt. However, there is no evidence at this time that these outbreaks are related to the ongoing U. S. outbreak.
