Update on the CDC Response to the Ebola Outbreak
Back from a visit to West Africa with outbreak responders, CDC director will hold media briefing


WHAT: Media Briefing will include a public health assessment of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and an update on CDC and USG efforts to control the spread of the outbreak and steps to help stop the largest-ever outbreak of Ebola.

I heard Dr. Frieden this morning on CNN saying that the ebola outbreak in West Africa is "out of control".

"We've seen outbreaks of Ebola before. This is the first epidemic spreading widely through many countries, and it is spiraling out of control," said Frieden, who recently returned from a trip to the region. "It's bad now, much worse than the numbers show. It's going to get even worse in the very near future."

That was painful to listen to. Colossal mismanagement. No leadership, no accountability. General demands without any metrics. Old playbooks that are obviously failing.

They need to state quantities and who specially needs to do what. These super general statements are going nowhere. They are just screaming for help but not directing anything.

I felt I was hearing more of a political campaign of the CYA type.

They should have stated how many more boots on the ground they need, and who needs to provide them.

I didn't realize how bad it is until now. Nobody is taking a real lead here.

I can not believe that CNN cut him off and went onto another story. I couldn't even find it on MSNBC or Al Jazeera. Did any network carry this press conference. It's huge news! If any one has a video of the complete conference, please post!

Agreed. There is no one in charge. It seems every company, NGO, government, et. al. is "doing their own thing."

Oh dear. Until now the CDC appears to have been more proactive that any other national organisation (excluding the NGOs e.g. MSF), and I had hoped they were stepping in to fill the global leadership void. That said, all credit to Tom Frieden for doing what he can to focus minds on the problem; please continue.

However, this does not bode well for bringing the outbreak under control, and its going to get exponentially harder to do as the outbreaks spread to new territories and countries.

CDC warns Ebola epidemic in West Africa is outpacing current response

CDC Director highlights US government response; calls for vastly increased and accelerated international response in West Africa

CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. reported on his visits last week to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and called for immediate steps across nations to accelerate response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Dr. Frieden described a daunting situation and called for speed, flexibility and work on the front lines to take precedence.
