Teleconference notes:


110 being observed in 26 states.

No new confirmed cases over night. 5 at this time

Diagnostic test developed. Currently refining it.

Will share test with the world.

CDC uploaded genetic data from at least one US case to genbank.

It doesnt look like the virus has mutated at this time.

Avoid all non-essential travel to Hubei, China

Enhanced precautions for all travelers to China.

"Risk depends on exposure."

At this time this virus is not spreading in the community in the US. Risk in US is low.

Screened about 2400 people so far. Wuhan arrivals are declining.

Considering broadening US screening. No decision yet.

Not all scientists have the same interpretation of data. So far - thinking incubation period is 2-14 days.

Making sure test is accurate. Blueprint is posted online. Kits are being developed for distribution.

Where did virus come from? CDC is working to understand. Some info under consideration is genetic sequencing comparisons and some is epidemiological.

Risk on packages from China - MERS and SARS, beta coronavirus viruses info as a guide, suggest virus can live for hours (out side the body). So possibly low risk to be spread via packaging. No evidence to suggest risk with imported goods.

Older adults possibly at more risk of death. All 5 US cases are older persons.

Working as fast as we can to get kit out.

Lots of news coming out of China. Trying to take all of that into account.

Evaluate each patient differently for testing. Depends on risk.

Which 26 states? Sensitive about releasing that info. Ask the different states. They decide.

Direct flights from Wuhan are stopped but there are people who have "broken" travel schedules and did at one point travel through Wuhan.

Focusing on Wuhan travelers who have respiratory and fever symptoms.

If you have recently traveled from Hubei and you have fever and respiratory symptoms, please call a health provider.

I very much hope that the CDC as well as the WHO take note of the disgrace that is befalling Chinese public officials who failed to recognize the dangers and downplayed the health warnings.
Their credibility is all they have, if they offer false reassurance, their institutions will be permanently damaged at a minimum.
