Guidance for Relief Workers and Others Traveling to Haiti for Earthquake Response
At this time, CDC recommends that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Haiti.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2010, close to the nation's capital of Port-au-Prince. The quake was felt in the Dominican Republic and as far away as Jamaica, and aftershocks remain a possibility. Conditions in Port-au-Prince remain hazardous.
Reports indicate a significant loss of life, but numbers of casualties are not yet known. Communication remains difficult, and extensive damage to buildings, roads, and other infrastructure has been reported. Several hospitals and health centers in Port-au-Prince have collapsed. Humanitarian response has been initiated by the international community.
