CDC Director Speaks at Flu Conference

Editor, Senior Moderator
ATLANTA - The director of the Centers for Disease Control says his agency did not raise a false alarm about the seriousness of the H1N1 flu.

The H1N1 pandemic may not have been as deadly as health officials predicted early on, but Dr. Frieden bristled at the idea it was a mild flu season.

Speaking at a flu conference Monday, Dr. Frieden said five times as many children died from the H1N1 flu than in a normal flu season.

The CDC estimates about 61 million Americans or 19 percent caught the virus.

Dr. Frieden says days after the first cases surfaced, the CDC was able to identify this never-before-seen strain of flu, and within two weeks it had developed a test to diagnose it.

Due to delays in developing the vaccine, it was months late.

Dr. Frieden says, in hindsight, the CDC should have been more cautious about predicting when it would be ready.
