As a Caribbean outbreak persists, public health officials in the Cayman Islands confirmed the first local case of imported dengue fever by a returning resident.
There have been no locally transmitted dengue cases reported in the Cayman Islands so far for this year. Last year saw a total of two confirmed cases, one imported and one with no travel history.
So far in 2012, 17 of 23 Caribbean countries have reported more than 1,500 confirmed dengue fever cases. According to the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre Surveillance Report, as of August 2012 Belize, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Curacao account for approximately 87% of the cases reported in the region.

Cayman Islands government health authorities waited at least 48 hours to tell the public about several locally transmitted cases of dengue fever.
The reason for the delay, according to the Health Services Authority Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar, was because there is a protocol to follow before information is released to the public...

Aedes-aegypti-2.jpg(CNS): In the wake of a fifth case of locally transmitted dengue fever in West Bay the MRCU is pressing ahead with its additional ground and air operations despite the weather. In an effort to keep the numbers of the Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that carries the disease, under control the unit will be carrying out early evening aerial missions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, instead of Tuesdays and Thursdays as originally scheduled. However, the mozzie experts are asking people to follow the guidelines to eliminate breeding grounds around their homes and to prevent bites. Iin the most recent outbreak of the disease of the eight cases that have been confirmed three were imported and five transmitted in Cayman.
The department said this week that it is waiting on results for a further 20 cases and officials say there may be further local cases confirmed as a result of the recent rain and the increase in standing water where the Aedes aegypti breeds...
Ten new dengue cases reported

Public health officials reported Tuesday that the number of dengue cases in Cayman jumped from 16 to 26.
As of 16 November, the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre in Trinidad and Tobago, known as CAREC, had confirmed that of the 59 samples from suspected dengue sufferers in Cayman it had received since the start of this year, 26 were positive for dengue, 10 are pending and 23 were negative.
Since the last official update on 10 November, 10 suspected cases have been reclassified as confirmed dengue cases. There have also been three new suspected cases since then, the Cayman Islands Public Health Department reported...

Another nine new suspected cases of dengue fever over a week-long period are being investigated.
As of 8 December, there have been 31 confirmed cases this year, with four new cases being confirmed last week. Another 36 cases this year, including 10 tested last week, were found to be negative. The results of 15 other cases of suspected dengue are pending...
