Note: CDC reports hospitalization and death counts by influenza season. The current count for the 2009 ? 2010 influenza season started August 30, 2009. Due to the progression of the outbreak, states may choose to no longer count and report individual novel H1N1 hospitalizations and deaths; hospitalizations and deaths from pneumonia and influenza may instead be reported to CDC.

ILI sentinel activity is at 0.9%, which is similar compared with the previous week (0.8%). Preliminary influenza- and pneumonia-related deaths are 6.0%, which is below the epidemic threshold (12.3%).
Because these two systems collect information using different methods and represent different
patient populations, it is expected that the proportions of ILI and ARI seen in these systems will
differ. However, the overall trend of activity is expected to be similar.
For week 41 (10/11/09?10/17/09), 1.2% of patient visits to NH ILINet participating providers
were due to ILI, based on 18 providers reporting 3,852 patient visits, which is similar compared
to activity in week 40 (1.0%). In AHEDD for week 41, 4.2% of patient visits to hospital
emergency departments were due to ARI, based on 17 hospitals reporting a total of 9,405
patient encounters, which is an increase compared to activity in AHEDD reported for week 40
(3.3%).
Reported ARI & ILI for 2009-10 and for the three previous seasons is shown in the graph below.
Pneumonia & Influenza Mortality
Pneumonia and influenza (P&I) deaths in NH are identified through review of electronically filed
death certificates by looking at the causes of death listed on each death certificate. The graph
below, which shows the proportion of deaths attributed to P&I, represents all deaths recorded by
NH?s Division of Vital Records Administration. This includes resident and non-resident deaths
that occurred within the State, and may not include deaths of NH residents that occurred out-ofstate,
or cases being investigated by the Medical Examiner's Office.
For week 41 (10/11/09?10/17/09), 6.8% of all deaths recorded in NH were reported as due to
P&I. This is below the epidemic threshold for week 41 (11.7%).
