First Chikungunya infection confirmed in Bonaire

June 16, 2014

BONAIRE - The first Chikungunya infection has been detected in Bonaire. Most likely, the patient contracted the disease abroad, the Department of Public Health / Public Health Service Bonaire reported.

According to Alcira Janga-Jansen of the department, preventive measures are taken, "indeed the same measures as for Dengue. We monitor the situation closely. The fight against Chikungunya and Dengue will be done according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and PAHO Organisation. "

Janga-Jansen did not give details for reasons of privacy on the newly confirmed case. It is also not known in which country the patient has contracted Chikungunya. The Public Health / Public Health Service Bonaire Department works within a network to combat viral infections.
