The first case of chikungunya has been registered in Cura?ao. It is a patient who may have been bitten by a mosquito on the island itself. So far the disease occurred predominantly in travelers from infected areas in the Caribbean and northern South America.
CDC Cura?ao mentions eight other possible cases of infection, but curthese are not yet confirmed. Health authorities will give additional details this Friday. An information campaign may be started.

WILLEMSTAD--Cura?ao?s Department of Public Health received about 1,500 reports of possible infection with chikungunya, of which 458 were confirmed.
According to director Sirving Keli, the department is preparing to open a ?chikungunya hotline.? He stressed that the 1,500 reports and 458 infections were provisional findings up to October 9. ?That means that the figures can still change.?
On September 23 there were still 295 individuals who had the chikungunya virus. People can call the special telephone number for inquiries, complaints and also to report mosquito plagues. Keli expected the hotline to be operational today, Friday.

WILLEMSTAD - Epidemiologist Izzy Gerstenbluth says there are probably 20 thousand chikungunya patients in Cura?ao. He uses a mathematical model tested because there is hardly any more.
Neither is every patient to the doctor. The magnitude of the epidemic is mainly due to the lack of immunity in the population.
