Speaking to the press in Praia, however, she stressed that she was not able to say whether the death of a patient in the municipality of Santa Cruz was linked to dengue fever or not.

“Examinations are underway to confirm or deny this. However, we take the opportunity to appeal to the entire population that this challenge belongs to all of us and that we must fight against mosquitoes,” he said. indicated Ms. Gonçalves.

The first two cases of dengue fever in Cape Verde were confirmed on November 6 by the Pasteur Institute in Dakar. END

Cape Verde with 232 confirmed dengue cases and 485 suspected cases

12/28/2023 15:24 - MODIFIED ON 12/28/2023 15:24

The number of dengue cases in Cape Verde has risen to 232 and there are 485 suspected cases, the national director of Health, Ângela Gomes, said today, after the country announced the resurgence of the infection in early November.

“In the total number of suspected cases reported, we already have 485, of which 232 are confirmed,” Ângela Gomes told Lusa.

The national director of Health explained that the cases are more concentrated on the island of Fogo, with a total of 169 positive cases, and on the island of Santiago, especially in the city of Praia, which has 51 cases.

In November, the country had 32 positive cases.

The authorities reinforced information campaigns, cleaning and anti-mosquito spraying in areas with the most cases.

The most serious dengue outbreak in Cape Verde was recorded in 2009, with 21,000 cases and six deaths, all on the island of Santiago.

Fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, along with skin inflammation, are part of the symptoms of the infection which, in the most serious cases, can evolve into dengue hemorrhagic fever and, at the limit, cause death.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Cape Verde has been experiencing a dengue epidemic
since epidemiological week 24 in 2023 (week ending
on 17 June 2023). After six weeks of plateauing in the
number of new suspected cases and confirmed cases,
there was a sharp increase in the incidence of suspected
cases and confirmed cases in epidemiological week 22
in 2024 (week ending 1 June 2024). In epidemiological
week 22 of 2024, 55 new suspected cases and 31 new
confirmed cases were reported.

Since the onset of the dengue outbreak in Cape Verde,
there have been 1 422 suspected cases and 755
confirmed cases. To date, no deaths from Dengue have
been confirmed in Cape Verde.

Females have had a slight predominance in the cases, at
52.0%. The most affected age group is the 10 to 19-yearold
age group, with 22.0% of cases. The suspected and
confirmed dengue cases in Cape Verde are distributed
within six islands and 15 counties in the country. The most
affected island is Fire Island, with 67.0% of suspected
cases and 69.0% of confirmed cases.

Laboratory surveillance of the dengue virus shows that
among confirmed cases, serotyping identified DENV-3
as the predominant circulating serotype, accounting for
approximately 95%, while the others were DENV-1.
Poor vector control has been identified as one of the
major enablers of dengue outbreaks. Cape Verde, in
collaboration with WHO and UNICEF, is implementing
vector control strategies to curb the mosquito burden,
hence the improvement that has been seen in previous
weeks.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

All health officials at the national level met to discuss
case definitions and epidemiological, entomological
and laboratory surveillance. Subsequently, a Dengue
Response Coordination team was established, holding
regular meetings to coordinate and harmonize outbreak
management activities. Anti-vector and anti-larval control
activities intensified, and breeding sites were eliminated
through cleaning campaigns.

Mosquito capture using sentinel traps and genomic
sequencing of dengue-infected mosquitoes have
also been conducted. Entomological senior experts
from WHO have also provided technical assistance
surveys and investigations on larvae, nymphs,
and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to understand the
mosquito’s resting behaviour, vector control, and
larvicide effectiveness and to develop standard
operating procedures and dengue emergency
risk estimation tools.

There has been prompt case identification using
guidelines and investigation of case clusters to
determine the source of infections and understand
the pattern of spread.

Hospitalized cases are being treated using the
recommended clinical guidelines, while patients
not meeting admission criteria are advised to use
mosquito nets at home.

Information education and communication on
dengue using various media sources such as
posters, press releases, Television and radio
stations have been ongoing in partnership with
the Red Cross to sensitize on disease prevention
measures and elimination of mosquito breeding sites.

SITUATION INTERPRETATION

Cabo Verde still faces some challenges in response
to the dengue outbreak, for instance the need
for improved testing and surveillance to avoid an
exponential increase in cases, the need to distribute
rapid testing kits to health structures, the maintenance
of the laboratory’s research and serotyping capacity,
and the need to strengthen community mobilization
for the implementation of the Dengue prevention
and control measure. To improve effectiveness and
sustainability of the response, public health and
social control measures must be tailored to the current
epidemiological, social, and economic situation in
Cape Verde.

Cape Verde: around 2,000 cases of dengue fever recorded since November 2023

French.news.cn | 2024-08-27 at 18:47

PRAIA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Cape Verde health authorities have recorded around 2,000 cases of dengue fever on six of the country's nine inhabited islands since November 2023, National Health Director Angela Gomes said Monday.

The island of Santiago, and especially Praia, the capital, concentrates the majority of cases with more than 1,300 cases recorded, but there is also transmission of the disease on the islands of Maio, Fogo, Brava and Boa Vista, she stressed in an interview with the press after a meeting in Praia with the heads of the country's health structures.

"Since mid-November last year, we began receiving reports of dengue cases in the southern islands, starting with the city of Praia, specifically in the northern neighborhoods of the city," noted the coordinator of the dengue control program, Antonio Moreira.

After the first cases were recorded in Praia, which is the epicenter of the disease "with around 30 to 40 cases", the epidemic moved to the island of Fogo, more precisely in the municipality of São Filipe, and then to Mosteiros, he explained.

Mr. Moreira added that, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, the Ministry of Health has developed an emergency plan that consists of training health workers, but also informing the population on ways to combat and prevent the emergence of mosquitoes that transmit dengue. End

Cape Verde: Dengue fever outbreak prompts government to declare state of emergency

By Wamini SIDWAYA-September 2, 2024

Cape Verde is on high alert as the dengue fever outbreak continues to spread, with more than 2,200 cases confirmed to date. The islands of Santiago, Fogo, and Brava are the most affected, leading the Cape Verdean government to declare a civil protection alert situation on these three islands for the next three months.

Faced with this worrying situation, the government has decided to strengthen the institutional framework for the prevention and fight against dengue fever. Special, multi-sectoral and exceptional measures will be put in place to try to slow the spread of the virus. A task force will also be created to coordinate efforts across the different sectors.

The mosquito that carries dengue fever is present on all the islands, but it is on Santiago, Fogo, and Brava that the epidemic is most intense.

In this context, the alert situation aims to adopt special, multisectoral and exceptional preventive measures, which cannot be mobilized at the municipal level.

Therefore, special preventive measures are adopted, such as the creation of a multisectoral Task Force, with the mission of supporting health structures in strengthening response actions to the public health emergency, which will guarantee the execution of the integrated emergency program, aiming to strengthen the prevention and fight against dengue.

Furthermore, this alert situation, as stated by Minister Janine Lélis, requires the raising of the state of readiness of the security forces and services and of all civil protection agents, the increase in the level of readiness and mobilization of medical emergency, public health and social support teams, by the competent entities in the areas of health and social security, through their respective departments, as well as the activation of emergency and civil protection plans at different territorial levels.

The resources will be guaranteed by the National Emergency Fund, with a view to financing prevention and response actions within the scope of civil protection. The declaration of the civil protection alert situation lasts for 3 months and can be renewed.

Dengue outbreak spikes in Cabo Verde
The country recorded its fifth death on Sunday as confirmed cases surge to nearly 14,000 in only the second outbreak in the country’s history
Drier, cooler months ahead may help slow the spread of the mosquito-borne disease, which can be asymptomatic in many cases but serious in some
ARTICLE BY Staff Reporter
UPDATED: 13 Nov 2024, 7:41 am

A year into an outbreak of dengue fever in Cabo Verde, the mosquito-borne disease has claimed the life of a fifth victim, reports VOA Portuguese.
The West African archipelago has recorded 20,968 suspected cases since the outbreak began in November 2023, of which 13,827 are confirmed. The latest death was recorded on Sunday in the municipality of Santa Cruz on Santiago, where the outbreak began and the most affected locale in the country.
A two-month contingency situation declared by the government in early October seems to have done little to slow the growth in cases, which have more than doubled in the month since. An alert issued in August proved similarly ineffective against the spread...
