Sunnybrook investigating possible Ebola case

A patient at Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital is being checked for the Ebola virus.

The hospital said in a statement it is assessing a patient who came in Wednesday morning complaining of fever and nausea.

The patient is being kept in isolation in a negative pressure room, which are used to treat those with communicable diseases.

According to the hospital, the patient recently travelled to West Africa...

This morning, Sunnybrook received a patient with fever and nausea, and a recent travel history to West Africa. The patient is currently being assessed in a negative pressure room by a small team of our most qualified staff.

Dr. Andrew Simor said the unidentified woman had been in Guinea. But the hospital believes she left that country more than 21 days ago. The incubation period for Ebola -- the time from infection to when symptoms become apparent -- is between two to 21 days.

"At this point we think it's highly unlikely based on the history that we have available to us. But we are being cautious because we want to be sure that we got the history right," said Simor, the hospital's chief of microbiology.

Results from the Public Health Ontario Laboratory show that a patient being treated at Sunnybrook, who recently traveled to West Africa, does not have Ebola Virus Disease.
