OTTAWA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Canada's Health Minister Leona Aglukkaqon Sunday said the country is well-prepared to deal with the outbreak of swine flu and pledged to take whatever measures to keep the public safe.
The remarks came after six cases of swine flu were confirmed in the country earlier Sunday.
At a press conference in Ottawa, Aglukkaq said after the first cases were found, more cases are possibly coming.
"...As we continue to ramp up our surveillance efforts, these cases are likely not the last we'll see in Canada," she said.
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones said at the press conference the six affected people have already started to recover from their illness and their symptoms were all mild.
He urged the public to practice "good flu prevention techniques," through frequent hand-washing, coughing into one's sleeve or arm, and staying home when sick, to avoid affecting others.
Earlier in the day, health officials in the eastern province of Nova Scotia confirmed four high school students have been infected with swine flu. Two of these students recently traveled to Mexico.
The western province of British Columbia also said two people who just returned from Mexico were found to have swine flu. The two are separate cases.
