14 cases, including 3 hospitalizations, of Legionnaires' disease in London

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease for the past week.

Three people are hospitalized among the 14 confirmed cases.

Public health was notified of the first cases on July 24 when several employees at the same workplace became ill. The agency is declining to name the company because it won't help the public assess the risk of catching the disease, according to Joanne Kearon of the Middlesex-London Public Health Unit.

The Legionnaires' disease outbreak was officially declared on July 26 by the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

The investigation is now focusing on an entire district of the city. Samples will be analyzed to confirm the source of the Legionnaires' disease.

There are now ten people in hospital after a legionnaires' disease outbreak in London with an additional ten people sick with the air-born illness.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit said Thursday it continues to investigate the source of the legionella bacteria, which causes high fever, chills and a dry cough.

It said it first learned it was circulating when employees at a workplace got sick on July 24. The health unit won't disclose the location of the workplace, but says the disease has now spread to a neighbourhood.

"We are currently sampling cooling towers and units that are in the area that we suspect the source is," said Dr. Joanne Kearon, the health unit's associate medical officer of health.

Investigators with the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) say they are still struggling to find the source of a local outbreak of legionnaires' disease declared in July that has now led to two deaths.

There have been a total of 30 confirmed legionella cases between May 1 and Sept. 26, the health unit in southwestern Ontario said Friday. The ages of those infected range from 37 to 76, and more than half are men. All 30 have been hospitalized at some point, with nine admitted to the intensive-care unit (ICU). Four cases remain in hospital...
