Canada offers experimental Ebola vaccine VSV-EBOV to West Africa

Canada has about 1,500 doses of the vaccine and will donate as many as 1,000 to WHO

The Canadian PressPosted: Aug 12, 2014 5:47 PM ET|Last Updated: Aug 12, 2014 7:26 PM ET

A made-in-Canada experimental Ebola vaccine will be offered for use in the West African outbreak response, the Public Health Agency of Canada revealed Tuesday.

The news comes hours after the World Health Organization said a panel of experts advised that it would be ethical to use untested drugs and vaccines in this raging epidemic, which is several times larger than any previous outbreak.

"We see this as a global resource and we need to have some conversations to figure out what the best use of this experimental vaccine is," said Dr. Gregory Taylor, deputy head of the public health agency.

He said the agency would be discussing options with international partners and the WHO over the coming days to try to come up with a plan for the best use of what is a limited number of vaccine doses.

Ambrose added that "Canada feels this experimental vaccine is a global resource, so in response we are sharing it with the international community, while keeping a small supply in Canada."

A ministry statement acknowledged that while the vaccine, known as VSV-EBOV, has never been tested in humans, it "has shown promise in animal trials."

Experts, not politicians, to decide who gets donated Ebola vaccine: Canada

By Helen Branswell, The Canadian Press August 14, 2014 8:40 AM

TORONTO - The Canadian government says experts, not politicians, will decide how donated Canadian Ebola vaccine will be used.

Canadian Heritage Minister Shelly Glover says politics has no place in the decisions on how best to use the 800 to 1,000 doses Canada has promised to donate.
...
To date the only person who has received the vaccine was a German researcher who pricked her finger with a needle containing Ebola virus in 2009.

The woman survived, but it was never clear if the vaccine was the reason. It was possible she was not infected in the first place.

Re: Canada offers experimental Ebola vaccine VSV-EBOV to West Africa

I'm very disappointed that World Heath Organization is not going to use any of the 1000 doses of Canadian made VSV-EBOV Ebola Vaccine to treat Doctors and Nurses who are being exposed to Ebola patients every day.

Are they saving it just in case there's a breakout somewhere outside of Africa? My understanding was it would be used to protect the HCW's on the front lines NOW.

The World Health Organization says more than 170 healthcare workers have been infected and at least 81 have died. The death toll from Ebola is still climbing.

The Free vaccine gift from Canada should have come attached with a
"use it or loose it" clause.

The silence is deafening. the message is," You're not worthy"
