Canada conducts surveillance for avian influenza in wild birds. In addition, enhanced surveillance was undertaken in wild birds in response to the event in poultry (H5N2) in the province of British Columbia (BC) in December 2014. This sample was collected in February 2015 as part of the enhanced surveillance undertaken by BC. The sample was received from the BC provincial laboratory by the Canadian Food inspection Agency (CFIA) National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease (NCFAD) on 25 March 2015 for further testing. The results confirmed HPAI H5N8 virus with an IVPI of 2.73. Sequencing of the H5N8 virus isolated indicates it is a wholly Eurasian H5N8 and very similar to the H5N8 virus that was isolated from the gyrfalcon in Washington State in December 2014. This is the first report of a H5N8 HPAI virus detection in Canada. This virus has NOT been found in commercial poultry anywhere in Canada. In accordance with the Terrestrial Animal Health Code Article 10.4.1, Member Countries should not impose bans on the trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of influenza A virus in wild birds.

Avian influenza H5N8 confirmed in wild bird carcass in British Columbia

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently confirmed that the carcass of a wild duck in British Columbia has tested positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 virus that has been reported in the United States.

The Agency also confirmed that this particular virus strain holds the same genetic fingerprints as the strain identified in wild birds in December 2014 by state authorities in Washington State.

The bird carcass was collected from a wild bird sanctuary near Abbotsford, British Columbia as part of ongoing surveillance activities by the province of British Columbia. Wild bird surveillance is one of several ways that provincial/territorial governments, industry and animal and public health practitioners monitor for notifiable avian influenza in Canada. The CFIA supports wild bird surveillance though the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative. TheCWHC coordinates wild bird surveillance activities on behalf of federal, provincial and territorial government partners.

The CFIA is reporting this case to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). According to OIE guidelines, the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in wild birds should not disrupt trade between member countries.

Avian influenza does not pose a risk to food safety when poultry and poultry products are properly handled and cooked. Avian influenza rarely affects humans that do not have consistent contact with infected birds.
