COMMUNICATION ON THE REPORTED POULTRY MORTALITIES
AT THE COMPLEXE AVICOLE DE MVOG-BETSI IN YAOUNDE.

On Sunday 22 May 2016, the Epidemiosurveillance Network of the
Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries noticed an
abnormally high mortality rate at the Complexe Avicole de Mvogbetsi,
in Yaound?.

Current estimated mortality is estimated at 24000 out of 33000, for a
mortality rate of about 75%.

Faced with this delicate situation, the Government applied a number
of measures aimed at containing the outbreak and limiting the spread
of the disease. These include amongst others :
- Proscribing access to the site to strangers;
- Banning entry and exit of livestock products to the site;
- Slaughter of the remaining birds on the farm ;
- Incineration and burial of all carcasses in conformity with the law
in force;
- Control of movement of susceptible domestic species and humans
in the zone ;
- Daily visits of veterinary and medical staff to the site;
- Disinfection of buildings, vehicle tracks and other fomites
capable of contaminating susceptible species ;
- Constitution of an emergency stock of anti-viral drugs
(TAMIFLU) and individual protective equipment ;
- Investigation and monitoring of persons having visited the farm or
carried out commercial activities with the farm during the week of
the 15th to the 22nd of May 2016.

Investigations and laboratory results indicate high suspicion of H5
avian influenza and analyses on the N antigen are on-going.

It is what noting that an interministerial platform was created since
2012, the National Program for the Prevention and Fight against
Emerging and Reemerging Zoonoses, under the authority of the Prime
Minister and Head of Government which regroups the ministries
incharge of wildlife, the environment, human and animal health
amongst others.

Through this Program, the Government elaborated and validated an
integrated multisectoral contingency plan for avian influenza in April
2016.
Aimed at controlling avian influenza in Cameroon, the integrated
multisectoral contingency plan has five strategic axes:
- Epidemiological surveillance ;
- Prevention and biosecurity ;
- Health systems response ;
- Operational research ;
- Sensitization and communication.

The Government wishes to inform the national and international
opinion that there has been no human case reported so far. The only
case reported so far is that of the Complexe Avicole de Mvog-Betsi in
Yaound?, the situation is under control and investigations are ongoing.

The Government calls on poultry farmers to be vigilant and asks them
to signal all suspicious mortalities in their farms to the veterinary
services.

Bird Flu Hits Cameroon Again, Kills 15000 Fowls In Yaounde

The highly pathogenous type H5 Bird Flu influenza has been reported in Cameroon. The confirmation of the presence of the virus is contained in a laboratory test conducted by the Yaounde annex office of the National Veterinary Laboratory known by its French acronym as LANAVET.

The test was conducted following the massive death of over 15000 fowls in a poultry of about 20,000 capacity carrying chicks within three days at the Mvog-Betsi Poultry Complex located in the Yaounde VI District.

The poultry complex is specialised in the production and sale of day-old chicks. According to a report dated May 24, highlighting results of analysis placed under diagnosis No 037/2016 conducted on 36 samples of carcases of the dead fowls, signed by the Director of LANAVET, Dr. Abel Wads, 15,000 dead fowls were recorded between Friday May 20 and Monday 23.

Information concerning the avian flu

The sale of chicken has been prohibited in Bafoussam. The governor of the West region ,Augustine Awa Fonka gave a press briefing last friday after the discovery of bird flu outbreaks in his administrative area of command.

Dispite the unfortunate situation,poultry farmers of the MiFi (Bafoussam) and Kung-khi(Bandjoun) Division must face the sad reality that Avian Influenza Outbreaks have been detected in these two Divisions of the West.

After the death of 1,400 chickens in a farm in Bayangam and 40 dead chickens in Casablanca market of Bafoussam , on May 31st Samples from the carcasses were sent to Yaounde National Veterinary Laboratory.The samples were then forwarded to the Centre Pasteur for cons-expertise, of which the results came positive.
