The High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Program (WFP) call on donors from the international community to release additional funds to help these refugees.

The next few days will be difficult for the some 12,000 Central African refugees living in the region of eastern Cameroon. “Due to the lack of funding since May and June 2020, it appears that WFP has been forced to reduce its food aid by 50%. And given the current level of funding, this UN agency will have to completely cease its assistance in cash as of August 2020 ", we learn in the columns of the daily Le Messager, edition of August 10, 2020.

These difficulties have forced refugees to change their eating habits "such as skipping meals, or reducing portions ... In some cases, some resort to begging, prostitution or early or forced marriages, in order to meet their food needs" , supports the newspaper.

Concerned by the situation, the UNHCR and the WFP call on the donors of the international community to release additional funds so that the refugees do not die of hunger in the coming months. At the global level, the newspaper reports, a joint statement from the two UN officials specifies that WFP's activities in favor of refugees require net funding of more than $ 1.2 billion to cover their needs until the end of the year, including $ 694 million for operations in Africa. And as part of the United Nations Global Humanitarian Response Plan to Covid-19, UNHCR is requesting $ 745 million for its activities, including $ 227 million for its operations in Africa.

While waiting for a possible mobilization of these funds, "they evoke the responsibility of the Cameroonian government to ensure that these Central African refugees are included in the social protection programs and the response plan against the Covid-19, in accordance with the commitments made in the framework of the Global Compact on Refugees, so that they can have access to food and emergency financial assistance, ”the newspaper concludes.
