The disease broke out in the health districts of Maroua 1 and Maroua 2 since last week, with the detection of cases of severe diarrhea in members of the same family. A few days later, the number of suspected and confirmed cases increased, from two to 11 and then to 25. There was one death, that of a five-year-old child.

The administrative authorities, led by the prefect of Diamaré, Jean Marc Ekoa Mbarga, launched an awareness campaign at the end of last week aimed at stopping the spread of the epidemic. During a field visit with health authorities, the head of the department asked the population and especially the traders established in the markets to respect basic hygiene measures. For him, cholera is a "disease of dirt". For example, he calls on them to avoid spreading food products on the ground or exposing certain products such as meat and letting flies land on them.
