A Kampong Cham province man suspected to have avian influenza will become the year?s eighth verified case if ongoing tests at the Institut Pasteur?s laboratory confirm him positive, health officials said yesterday.

The man was admitted to the Kampong Cham provincial hospital with respiratory problems after eating two ducks that had died in his village, where several poultry recently had died, said Ly Sovann, deputy director of the Communicable Disease Control Department.

Seang Nath, director of the health centre in Mesor Chrey, the patient?s home commune, said he quickly had sent the patient to the provincial referral hospital after learning that he had developed symptoms consistent with H5N1 on February 6. Despite government education efforts, ?some villagers are still eating poultry that are sick or died,? he said.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia reported on Tuesday that a 35-year-old man died of Avian Influenza H5N1, bringing the death toll to eight and the number of cases to nine in 2013, health officials and victim's family said Tuesday.

The man, identified as Thoeun Doeun, lived in Trung Trang district of Eastern Kampong Cham province.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia reported on Tuesday that a 35-year-old man died of Avian Influenza H5N1, bringing the death toll to eight and the number of cases to nine in 2013, health officials and victim's family said Tuesday.


The man, identified as Thoeun Doeun, lived in Trung Trang district of Eastern Kampong Cham province.

"He died of the bird flu virus last night after a four-day medical treatment at the Calmete Hospital in Phnom Penh," Suon Sokhy, younger sister of the victim, told China's Xinhua news agency over telephone.

She said that her brother became sick after he took a dead duck to cook and ate.

"Doctor told me that he died of bird flu," she said.

Sonny Krishnan, communications officer with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia, confirmed the death on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, he appealed to people to be high vigilant over the virus, saying that home slaughtering and preparation of sick or dead poultry for food is hazardous.

"This practice must be stopped. The greatest risk of exposure to the virus is through the handling and slaughter of live infected poultry," he said.

He added that parents and guardians should keep their children away from poultry -- do not allow them to touch feathers and do not keep poultry in their house.

"Parents and guardians must also make sure children wash their hands with soap and water after any contact with poultry," he said. "If they have fast or difficult breathing, they should seek medical attention at the nearest health facility."

Cambodia's Health Minister Mam Bunheng appealed to people to be more careful about the outbreaks of bird flu virus.

"I'd like to urge people not to eat ill or dead poultry," he told reporters on the sidelines of a health meeting on Tuesday. " Poultry must be cooked well. Properly cooked poultry meat is therefore safe to consume."

The country sees the worst outbreak of the virus this year since the disease was first identified in 2004. To date, the country has recorded 30 human cases of the virus, killing 27 people. -- BERNAMA

Eighth Cambodian dies from bird flu this year

Phnom Penh - A 35-year-old man died of bird flu in Cambodia Tuesday, a record eighth human fatality in one year in the country, authorities said.

Sok Touch, director of the communicable disease control department at the Ministry of Health, said he was concerned at the rising number of cases but noted that they did not seem to be connected.

PHNOM PENH: A 35-year-old man has become Cambodia's eighth bird flu fatality this year, prompting concern about the spread of the virus in the country, a health official said Tuesday. The latest victim, from the northeastern province of Kampong Cham, died on Monday night from the H5N1 virus in a Phnom Penh hospital, said Ly Sovann, deputy head of the health ministry's disease surveillance bureau.

"We are really worried about the situation because in just two months we have nine cases of bird flu," Ly Sovann told AFP.

"We are also worried about (possible) human-to-human transmission of bird flu, but it is not the case now," said Ly Sovann.

Ninth New Human Case of Avian Influenza H5N1 in Cambodia in 2013

Phnom Penh, 27 February 2013

The Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Kingdom of Cambodia wishes to advise members of the public that one more new human case of avian influenza has been confirmed positive for the H5N1 virus.

The ninth case, a 35-year-old man from Kbal Ou village, Me Sar Chrey commune, Stueng Trang district in Kampong Cham province, was confirmed positive for influenza H5N1 on 23 February 2013 by Institut Pasteur du Cambodge.

He developed fever on 8 February 2013 and his condition worsened on 10 February 2013 with fever, frequent cough, and dyspnea. Local private practitioners initially treated him but his condition further deteriorated.


On 13 February he was admitted to the Kampong Cham Hospital with fever, severe cough and dyspnea and was immediately treated with Tamiflu. He developed pneumonia on 21 February and was transferred to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh. Unfortunately, despite intensive medical care he died on 25 February.
