Secretary of State for Health Ministry, Youk Sambath, has instructed the task force to prioritise preventing infectious diseases at all border crossings during the upcoming Khmer New Year celebrations.
The directive was issued during the opening ceremony of a Zoom-based training course on health care services for controlling avian influenza (Influenza A/H5N1) in Cambodia, held on Tuesday.
The training course focused on rapid diagnosis of H5N1 avian influenza, the management and treatment of suspected or confirmed cases, disease control and prevention measures, and the referral system for communication with the emergency response team.
During her speech, Sambath commended the proactive efforts of the emergency response teams from the Department of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, as well as provincial teams, in their efforts to prevent the spread of avian influenza. She also emphasised the importance of vigilance at border crossings during the Khmer New Year, which will take place from April 14 to 16, 2025.
Sambath instructed the team to be alert for symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, and to promptly report any cases by submitting samples marked as “urgent” to the National Institute of Public Health.
She also noted the importance of ensuring timely medical attention and patient care in case of complications.
The training course was attended by Ly Sovann, Director of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, as well as representatives from the Department of Communicable Disease Control, the Hospital Department, the National Institute of Public Health, national hospitals under the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of National Defense, Preah Ketmealea Hospital, provincial and district referral hospitals, and about 1,000 health centres.
According to data from the World Health Organization, Cambodia has detected 64 cases of H5N1 avian influenza from 2003 to January 2024, including 41 deaths.
